With such controversy between Apple and the public on what they want the iPad switch to do - Mute or Rotation Lock - don't you think they might have considered simply adding a second switch, rather than allowing the user to pick which action the switch does?

Great - now I can choose to have it be the rotation lock, and I lose my mute functionality...
...or I can pick the mute option and lose the rotation lock functionality.

Brilliant, Apple - you've identified two discrete uses/needs for the switch, and your ABSOLUTELY BRAND NEW HARDWARE DESIGN completely disregards that two needs exist, allowing the user to assign one need or the other to the switch. Not even a third option for "both", that travelers might appreciate.

Apple is fantastic at excluding things that seem intuitive to just include.
Well engineered designs are both simple AND functional.
