There was actually the Ipad before the Iphone and there are prototypes that are available to see online as early as the 1990′s. When they realized what they had did with the tablet, which was their goal, they realized they could make a phone with the same concept. So the Ipad was put on hold and the Iphone put into years of technology and patents worldwide to protect it. So guess again on the HTC.

and the early touch screen from HTC was sucks…. Without the iPhone, I guess it will be longer for us to see technology application such as accelerometer, multi touch, proximity, gyro, etc on a mobile phone…..
I guess when apple launch iphone, the other smartphone makers just realized that how they should built it…. then everybody trying to make the same…

Same stories like ipad… without apple, there won’t be many tablets as of now around….

I guess the touch screen patent won’t be belong to HTC… There must be another company way way before HTC have this patent and they are providing license for this….

Thank you apple for again trying to make things more expensive for consumers. Maybe you can patent the English language and make every company that sells products in English speaking countries pay you royalties. Yeah that would be cool.

And this is why Apple will NEVER get another dime from me. Ever.

I bet the IQ of the reviewer is below 70. Because the patent describes multitouch(pinch gesture) AND single touch scrolling!!!
Geez… Every single line of the patent screams prior art.(I unfortunately read the whole thing :( )

I meant to say “patent and copyright system”. (Although there are some serious problems with trademarks, as well — primarily when trademark is used as an end-run around the limitations on copyright.)

Yeah Apple doesn’t really innovate, they just improve. I would imagine they would not win litigation about having multitouch, but I would also imagine they will not try. When they go after other companies it will be because of the specific gestures (eg pinch to zoom).

HTC made a touch screen phone/phones way way back b4 the was an iPhone….now if they had asked for patents on touch screens hence precluding other manufacturers from making touch screen devices…there will be no iPhone or all the Touch screen devices we have today. No patent should be given on the way u use a touch screen device…there are limited ways u have to interact with whats on the screen…u can tap double tap triple tap etc, u can swipe across left or right, swipe up or down, make circular movements or certain gestures on the screen etc. No one should claim that as theirs. There are a myriad ways to interact with a screen be it capacitve or not. The different ways of touching a screen is not and invention..no one should lay claim to that. Thats why they are called TOUCH SCREENS devices b/c u touch the screen to interact with the device..be it tapping or swyping…hellooo??? Invent something from scratch that has not been invented before then ask for a patent for that unique invention.

This is all you need:

“A computer-implemented method, for use in conjunction with a portable
multifunction device with a touch screen display, comprises displaying a
portion of page content, including a frame displaying a portion of frame
content and also including other content of the page, on the touch screen
display. An N-finger translation gesture is detected on or near the touch
screen display. In response, the page content, including the displayed
portion of the frame content and the other content of the page, is
translated to display a new portion of page content on the touch screen
display. An M-finger translation gesture is detected on or near the touch
screen display, where M is a different number than N. In response, the
frame content is translated to display a new portion of frame content on
the touch screen display, without translating the other content of the
page.”

N-finger represents swiping to move around pages, and M-finger refers to multitouch. They got both of those input methods on lock.

They also appear to have gotten (a) the method itself, (b) interfaces, (c) devices, and (d) “non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs [that involve swiping and multi-touch gestures].” I’d only be able to guess what (d) is, and I’m guessing that it’s the device drives that contain programs with swipe and multi-touch software–which is surprisingly over-inclusive.
