Eeeng! (another buzzing sound) Wrong answer yourself. :)

I have 4 kids and they are all tech savvy (even my 8 yr old) and while yes, there are times when one of them will sit in front of the TV with the iPad or will be txting from the couch this is not the norm for them. Most of the time they will find something on Netflix they like and sit and watch it with pauses for one to go to the bathroom or for them all to get a snack but they all are usually unitasking with the entertainment and will go back to their multitasking (my 14 yr old daughter has a thing for browsing, txting, music and facetime/skype all at once) activities as they go back to doing their own "thing" in another part of the house.

Mind you, this could be a result of my own insistence they they show respect for one another's ability to enjoy whatever they are watching by not being a distraction to the others but nonetheless they do exactly that and do so almost all the time.

sidenote: my kids are 8, 10, 14 and 16 so they cover the spectrum pretty well.

I think the AppleTV is great. In fact, I wish it were simpler (ie: A better method of text entry, less stuff Iʻll never use like flikr). I can control it with my iPhone via the remote app as well as push media to the TV quickly and nearly effortlessly from either my computer or my iThings. And I especially love that it takes up no space at all in my crowded apartment. Can it be better? Absolutely; but I think theyʻre definatly headed in the right direction with the platform.

Apple gaming system? I doubt it. First off price is big in gaming consoles. Even Microsoft struggles to keep the price in the right bracket, add the Apple Markup I don't know many people who would pay $1500-$2000 dollars for an aluminium console. Secondly hard market to break into, Microsoft had the benefit of the directx platform the basis of modern games, where few gamers even use Macs.

Small app gaming like Angry Birds on phone level hardware ect might work, but I have serious doubts Apple can compete in the tough console market.

horse hockey guy who wrote the article! I have owned iphone/ipod/macbook pro first gen apple tv and now the new second gen apple tv. ask me which device is my favorite, ask me which i use the most? Guess what its the second gen apple tv. Netflix + itunes + streaming content from my NAS = win. If they would just ad the verizon app or comcast app so i could get rid of my antiquated crap cable box then i would have the perfect setup.

Everyone is so impatient with Apple. They want everything now and perfect. When we all know that Apple will not release a product until they believe it's up to their own standards of what's good enough. Not Google perpetual-beta good enough, but Apple world-beating good enough. (Not that this guarantees the product succeeds, cough, Apple Hi-Fi, cough.)

I think Apple understands the living room perfectly that's why they haven't made a bigger push into it. For the time being. Steve Jobs has already told anyone who cared to listen (that means you Don Reisinger) that the problem with any AppleTV type device is your go to market strategy which right now is being obstructed by that 10 ton elephant lying in the middle of the road called the cable companies.

So if Apple does launch a real D-Day type thousand-ship assault on the living room, it will have to contend with the cable companies. They could either buy one of them and contend with forever being locked out of the region covered by the other cable carriers, or do an end run around the cable companies by rendering them irrelevant. If it's the latter, the approach will be something that, in typical Apple fashion, will completely reconfigure the whole living room entertainment (dare I say it?) paradigm. It will be something no one has ever imagined or envisioned before. Not even Don Reisinger.

Why can't Apple be everything to everyone. They should have an "App For That". Lol, on a serious note though, they should be able to come up with a great home entertainment product that can compete with the big game companies like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony for instance has many products and services that appeal to multiple types of people. The PS3 for instance is a great media hub that Apple should compete with. They need to go full bore with the hardware though, but it is possible since they already have other products that are similar. I don't have any Apple products, but my girlfriend does and I do see the appeal. It would get me more interested in these products if there was something they could provide that could give me more of an experience and tie all the products together. I think this is what people want. Give each product more value.

Why can’t Apple be everything to everyone. They should have an “App For That”. I don’t have any Apple products, but my girlfriend does and I do see the appeal. It would get me more interested in these products if there was something they could provide that could give me more of an experience and tie all the products together. I think this is what people want. Give each product more value.

As one of those who uses a Mini for his TV, I disagree but agree. A Mac Mini attached to a TV is not really the answer, but it is an alternative to the crap I was putting up with the cable companies. It still isn't a "one button" solution. But it has afforded me some flexibility without having to rely on the Entertainment industry solutions.

But I think BECAUSE AppleTV is still a hobby, this shows Apple DOES understand the living room and its deceptively complex issue. As Jobs said, there is no real go-to-market strategy that works yet. That's why none of the TV solutions (Boxee, GoogleTV, Roku, etc) are taking off and won't and why cable is only dying slowly. And with so many of the content providers dependent on the current system, they aren't eager to see changes all that much, anyway.

If Apple didn't understand the living room, they would have touted AppleTV as the solution it isn't and not a hobby. And I am not so certain how many people are all that interested in TV being different anyway. Maybe most of us tech heads, but we've changed already (Mac Mini's, WMC, Google TV, etc.). We're willing to take the time to figure new technical things out. The rest of the world? Not so much. Remember how frustrated most people were with trying to program VCRs? That issue is why most VCRS just became players and why current technical alternatives to the current TV system aren't more popular.

I've been using Windows Media Center for years now, from the start when it was a separate version of XP and not rolled into the retail releases. Last year, I put an InfiniTV4 in my Win7 x64 box and can now watch and record up to 4 channels at once in HD on my PC. I stream to my Xbox 360 using it as a media center extender, still in HD, to my living room. All of the features offered by the Apple TV are covered and more since I actually can address storage and use it as a DVR.
On the applications note, the ability to stream Netflix is no longer something that sets devices apart, my TV ships with a Netflix App installed in addition to Pandora and few other services. Those things are just expected in media managers these days. There are a limited few things shows that are AppleTV exclusive for purchase, but, since I have that DVR capability I'm not paying for shows that I can just record and watch when I please so that's not really a sell either.
I haven't seen any compelling reason to consider an Apple TV over any other option out there other than (if you're an iOS user) Airplay. If you're not an iOS user though, DLNA is essentially the same tech. Even with that, a lot of services let you pause and resume content across devices so pushing it by swipe isn't really a revolutionary feature either (LG supports this from phone to TV as well). Think about Netflix, you can start a video on your mobile device, pick up from where you left off on your TV, resume it again later on your PC, or even return to a smaller screen and pick up again on something like a Sony Dash. Sure, I'm not sending content wirelessly from one device to another, but, I'm also not limited to that one device.
I think Apple understands the living room. The issue is, they're trying to tell the consumer what they want as they have in other spaces and this time, they're wrong. The AppleTV is just a gateway device, it's a way to buy and access content that you can get to in a number of different ways already. They hit the right price point which was a bit of a shock, and I'm sure they'll keep trying until they find a good hook to pull users in.

I think Apple understands the living room.

I've been using my Apple TV for several months now and It works great. I was able to Airplay music from any iTunes installation, and stream movies from my iPod Touch or laptop to the big screen. It replaces the home stereo, and dvd player.

Now for games, It allows me to stream the game audio, but it's a bit laggy. I think the technology is not there yet. Go ahead call me a Fanboy, but I think Apple will get there soon.

It is not the living room that Apple does not understand...

It is the corollary of Moore's law...

"General Purpose Digital" replaces "Special Purpose Digital".

The living room solution is...

TV mirroring by smartphone/tablet controlled by Kinect.

Why Kinect and not smartphone/tablet as input? Becuase Kinect allows your focus to remain on the TV rather than the smartphone/tablet and spares you from shifting attention to and fro.

Why smartphone/tablet and not desktop/laptop? Frankly, I see PCs going away and I want to follow the rising sun.

U havent been in countries that Nokia billboards are like fastfood chains in the states given the fact that they jumped to WinMo due to a ceo that holds high number of ms shares

And what the f w ipad replaces bluray in the user post? Plus the fact that any modern tv could stream amazon, netflix so y i buy apple tv for? If u go on and say well i need a media box that i could stream photo, music, movie fr my collections. U have heard of rygel, ubuntu & vmware right? Even a $99 sony bluray could do all these tasks. Moving on.

Absolutely. Kind of glaring when Apple drops the ball on this, and not just recently, but for many years. Time spent chasing the Beatles for iTunes could have been better spent on a decent AppleTV (which in its un jail breaked state is just marginal for media serving). Also no Netflix on the older AppleTV YET. Thats just a software patch. I'd add no game console also. To cede a game console market to Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony is a major Apple failure also, esp when early Apple II's basically launched computer gaming, I remember jamming all the TV's in my Apt complex with an Apple II for games in ... well a long time ago.

Honestly Apple's recent batting average is way higher than others but the living room/family ecosystem is strike out. If they didn't make several glaring mistakes like this they would take over the world.

Wait... Apple doesn't understand the living room of the 50s through the 90s... but does it really need to stay stuck in those days? I look at today's living room and see people on their iPads, loosely watching TV. Perhaps the foundation that is Apple TV is the direction they need to go rather than looking back at the old days.

I'd prefer to think forward. I'd like to see a living room that doesn't resemble that of two years ago.

Bring on change Apple... there is a reason we no longer have black and white TVs, cassette tapes, and soon Blu-ray...
