Google has revenue of $35.76 billion (at current earnings) per year and Apple has revenue of $108 billion per year.

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=google+revenue+vs+apple

Google's gross margin is substantially higher than Apple's (meaning Google is much more over priced than Apple) so they make $9.5 billion/year profit to Apple's $25.9 billion/year.

No it isn't ... in fact the apple device is inferior in a number of ways, but the software is superior and it's the software that makes the difference. Sadly for Apple, the latest development tools target both apple and android platform meaning that within another 2 years or more the Android software will be on par. That's nothing to be upset about though ... unless your self-importance is somehow tied to some kind of absurd superiority complex associated with your electronics.

You should read your own post and then laugh at yourself. You seem to want to say that getting something free is good but you are actually saying the opposite.

Is it typical for Android fans to contradict their own point within two sentences? Android fans in general seem to suffer from extremely poor literacy.

i don't believe in a free lunch. someone is getting paid for many those free android apps.

people who make apps full-time have bills to pay, buy food, rent etc.sure some make apps as a hobby and are happy give them away for free. but the other free apps must be making money through either ads, in-app purchases, sponsorship/ promotion deals or worst case scenario malicious data mining that sends private data to organisations such russian crime syndicates.
i don't think it's foolish for apple users to pay for apps that are free on android. the apps are cheap, you give devs money so they can make a living and enough funds to make more apps and not have to be tempted to put crappy ads or malware in their apps.

@charlitoss:disqus --Can't tell if trolling or just very stupid...
You do realize that all but some of the small regional carriers require you to have a data plan if you're using a smartphone, right? Therefore, by definition, most Android users are paying for a data plan. Unless, of course, you're referring to the very few (and low-selling) Android PMP's on the market, in which case there are many, many more people using iOS devices (iPod Touch) w/o data plans than there are people using Android.

For app purchases, the difference lies in the usefulness of the apps available. I've only purchased a few apps, but they were very useful and vital to my needs (Titanium Backup, ROM manager, QuickClock, etc.). The other apps I don't pay for because the dev's either a) don't charge up front because they made it as a pet project and gave it away for free, as us nerds often do, or b) make money via ads. I'm willing to pay for apps just as much as the other guy, but ads at least make recurring money.

I agree on the piracy, not the security risks.
@ charlitos: That is a statement born of what can only be absolutely willful ignorance. Have you forgotten that in the US alone the first, third and fourth largest contract carriers were making the bulk of their smartphone money selling only Android, Blackberry and (shudder!) Windows Mobile devices, with Android phones leading that charge with several high-end models, for the last 2 years? It is so funny how people will ignore reality and just plain make up facts in order to promote their point of view. Please show all of us any evidence that the majority of HTC, Samsung Galaxy Series, or Motorola Droid series users do not have service contracts...:-) We're waiting...

Verizon didn't even have the iPhone until well after the 4 launched. Sprint only just got the 4s and T-Mobile doesn't even have it--they live and breathe Android for their contract phones (along with Blackberry) as does Sprint and did Verizon (the largest US carrier) before they recently got the iPhone. I also would like for you to show us all evidence that midrange to high end Android smartphones do not sell well on contract with carriers outside the US. EVIDENCE please... Not BS, unsupported statements...

It's funny... I own both Apple and iOS devices along with my Android phones, yet I have to say that I mainly read such foolish and regurgitated statements from the Apple lover camp. I'm still scratching my head as to why that is when so many demographic studies keep claiming that they are supposed to be, on average, smarter people... ;-)

Please show all of us any evidence that the majority of HTC, Samsung Galaxy Series, or Motorola Droid series users do not have service contracts…:-) We’re waiting…

Your analysis is at least partially wrong. Why would devs go to the trouble of such porting to a platform that actually has just as many users or more worldwide as iOS does (or at least should be at parity and beyond by the spring) and then give the exact same app away for free. Does that really make any sense to you? Do you think that these developers work for free or that they are somehow advertising an app on Android that is there completely free in order to somehow get users on the "paying" platform of iOS to buy the apps? What are you saying exactly?

What I see as reality in the current market is that many developers of the top grossing and top selling iOS apps have not or will not yet port their paid or more expensive apps to the Android ecosystem. These numbers will start to move in the other direction when more developers start to acknowledge that Android users, who are indeed willing to pay anywhere from $50 to $300 for their handsets (as recent history has obviously shown), are also more than willing to pay good money for quality and feature rich apps like Elements, The History of Jazz, Infinity Blade and others--IF ONLY THEY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO... Currently they can't even pay for these apps for Android because they are iOS exclusive. If you think anyone is paying them to develope for iOS then give those apps away for free on Android where--again--they are not even available for purchase, I'll gladly tell you to put down that crack pipe you're clearly smoking...

I suspect that, just as with Microsoft and Sony in the console wars, there are some devs who have exclusive deals with Apple to only publish and develope their apps for iOS--at least in the near term. Others just like the iOS ecosystem better and some are just set in their ways and it seems to much trouble to bother to adapt to a new set of development tools. That's where it's really up to Google to do more and better developement outreach (somewhat like Nvidia has been doing to promote gaming with their Tegra line of processors) to convince the skeptical that there is a viable alternative to selling their wares only through one vendor or on a single platform.

Apple obviously had a head start in this game over Google and Google is still playing catchup. The hope is that now that Google is streamlining their OS versions on all devices, is refining their market experience, better educating devs on their APIs and seeing incredibly explosive growth in their worlwide installed base of users that devs will finally see that there is without a doubt a market worth tapping into that can make them some serious money--if only they are willing to try...
