I think it is great that Apple is willing to donate old iPads. What bothers me is these donations do not go directly to schools; they go to Teach for America (TFA). TFA is a good philanthropic effort, but TFA does not comprise the majority of teachers, nor does TFA have a monopoly on teaching in low-income, high need areas. I have purchased a few old G4 computers (out of my own pocket) just so my low income students will have access to using these (old) tools. I would LOVE to have iPads donated. I suppose my classes and the students I teach do not qualify since I am not teaching through TFA. (For the record, I went through a college teacher education program and entered education as a second career about a decade ago.)

Would my classes be able to benefit too? I know we could provide tax deduction forms for any donations received.

Hypocrisy is "the state of pretending to have beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually have." Apple is not being hypocritical. Apple is openly admitting that they get the sale of the iPad 2 and they get an iPad 1 into the schools where teachers, administrators and school children have a chance to use them and grow accustomed to them. It's a total win for Apple. But it is also a win for the schools who get free iPads that they would not otherwise have received.

I think your true objection is that you feel that for it to be charitable, Apple should not profit in any way. Fine. It's not charitable. But it still helps the schools.

I think you'll find in life that you will be much more likely to get people to do charitable things if you can make their interests align with the interests of the charities. What Apple is doing here is clever. They are making it easy for people to donate. They are promoting themselves while helping a good cause. I would wish that every company found a clever way to do these things.

"...how could a one year old product could be considered for donation?"-Doris Guzman

Apple is doing a good thing here. They are suggesting that instead of re-selling or giving away one's iPad 1 when they upgrade to an iPad 2, that they donate the iPad 1 to a school instead. Some are criticizing this because it is not "ideal". The ideal solution, they say, would be to sell the iPad and donate the money directly to the school. But most of the people who bother to sell their iPads won't donate the money. Having them donate the iPad directly aligns the charitable with the easy and encourages people to do both the easy and the charitable thing.

Falkrik,

Quote:"I don't think it makes me a pseudo intellectual to point that out that UnderDoc is biased"
I'm not tracking all his posts but I can say for sure quite a lot of things Apple did in recent times went wrong and you can't stop people getting that opinion based on Apple's actions. Like they do to the music industry - that 30% commission for nothing/publishers/app developers with in-app purchases/playing political games towards well established browser plugins/ etc.
On the other point, how could a one year old product could be considered for donation? Seriously. Possibly they may try to re-sale and use that money for next product. A replacement offer with a big discount and Apple donating older version to charity would have been welcomed I guess. That'll show Apple's generosity to charities.

"I think you may need to stop being pseudo intellectual."

UnderDoc stated that: "This move, like everything Apple is doing, is sheer hypocrisy..." I don't think it makes me a pseudo intellectual to point that out that UnderDoc is biased.

"Donating directly to charity instead of buying Apple product would be even better."

True, but we're not talking about either. We're talking about people donating their used iPads.

It's like you're saying that if a person does not donate in the most efficient manner possible that their donation is somehow tainted. Should we be angry or disappointed with people who donate clothes or cars or cans of food instead of cash? If Apple is getting people to do indirectly what they would not do directly, we should be grateful.

"Do you mean a product that was released less than a year ago for hundreds of dollars is now considered as an used electronic device? Wow! I'm surprised!"

I'm sure that was intended as some sort of a stinging rebuttal but, regretfully, I don't understand your point at all.

The action is self-serving, but it still benefits others. That's pretty much the definition of win-win. And doing some good is better than doing nothing.

As to your suggestion that people should sell their iPads and donate the money to the schools, you know that that is a pipe dream. No significant number of people will take that action on their own.

Apple is just making it easier for those iPads to get into the hands of teachers. Anyone who knows anything about charitable giving knows that easy is good. People can be very generous. But the easier you make it, the more generous they are.

"This move, like everything Apple is doing, is sheer hypocrisy..."

Finally we get to your true agenda. There's no point is attempting to have a rational discussion about this or anything Apple because you made up your mind long ago and now you're just looking for reasons to support that decision.

But for anyone else reading this, let's try a thought experiment. Suppose we weren't talking about Apple. Suppose Best Buy or Microsoft or HP or your favorite company found a way to encourage their customers to donate their used electronic devices to a charitable cause and took over the administration of seeing that the devices made it to those charities. Would that really be "sheer hypocrisy"? Or would it be a good thing?

We criticize them because this action is self-serving while trying to pass as charity. As others have pointed out, anyone willing to donate to the schools can do so by selling the iPad and using the money.

The downside of Apple's offer is that the iPads may turn out to be less useful than the cash. It is also clear that Apple wants to boost sales of the new iPad by offering people to get rid of the old ones for a noble cause, instead of reselling those old iPads -- this would in turn make people who would like to try the iPad by buying a second-hand model more likely to have to get a new one from Apple, as the availability of old units will be diminished.

This move, like everything Apple is doing, is sheer hypocrisy and mostly meant to maximize Apple's profits, something we have no doubt Apple is more than capable of doing.

When you talk about "others doing nothing", it would be fair to remember how much Bill Gates is giving to charitable causes... certainly more than other peoples' iPads...

When I read comments like these, I fear for humanity. Apple is facilitating the transfer of iPads to schools. That's it. It's a good thing. It's all upside. There's no downside. But you sure wouldn't know that from reading the comments. According to the attitudes expressed by you naysayers, Apple would have been better off doing nothing. Like everyone else.

Stop damning the light. If you don't like what Apple's doing, fine. Do something different. But stop criticizing them for doing something.

Like other comments. . . Apple, what is with you and not helping any charities yourself?

This is more like a scam--return your iPad and buy and iPad 2 so apple sells more iPads in general. And does apple then part the devices out, never seeing their destination, just to reuse the parts? not like the ipad 1 & 2 have that many dissimilar parts lmao.

Not to mention, is this really the best device for this community to be getting? Most likely not!

THIS IS A JOKE, APPLE!

Do Teach For America and its teachers even think this would be useful? Sounds like feel-good fluff on the part of Apple to me.

If you have an extra iPad and want to help, you're better off selling the iPad on your own and giving the actual money to the charity, school, or teacher of your choice. Get on DonorsChoose.org and pick a classroom project.

What a half-assed scheme on the part of Apple.
