I think your true objection is that you feel that for it to be charitable, Apple should not profit in any way. Fine. It’s not charitable. But it still helps the schools.

I think you’ll find in life that you will be much more likely to get people to do charitable things if you can make their interests align with the interests of the charities. What Apple is doing here is clever. They are making it easy for people to donate. They are promoting themselves while helping a good cause. I would wish that every company found a clever way to do these things.

Apple is doing a good thing here. They are suggesting that instead of re-selling or giving away one’s iPad 1 when they upgrade to an iPad 2, that they donate the iPad 1 to a school instead. Some are criticizing this because it is not “ideal”. The ideal solution, they say, would be to sell the iPad and donate the money directly to the school. But most of the people who bother to sell their iPads won’t donate the money. Having them donate the iPad directly aligns the charitable with the easy and encourages people to do both the easy and the charitable thing.

It’s like those flower salesmen that show up at restaurants and suggest that you buy a bouquet from them for your date…

I’m not tracking all his posts but I can say for sure quite a lot of things Apple did in recent times went wrong and you can’t stop people getting that opinion based on Apple’s actions. Like they do to the music industry – that 30% commission for nothing/publishers/app developers with in-app purchases/playing political games towards well established browser plugins/ etc.

Apple has closed buyers ecosystem. They’re first marketing group is existing users – although it sounds silly for other companies. Buy it, dump it, buy it, dump it… not different products but different releases of the same product from the same company.

The downside of Apple’s offer is that the iPads may turn out to be less useful than the cash. It is also clear that Apple wants to boost sales of the new iPad by offering people to get rid of the old ones for a noble cause, instead of reselling those old iPads — this would in turn make people who would like to try the iPad by buying a second-hand model more likely to have to get a new one from Apple, as the availability of old units will be diminished.

This move, like everything Apple is doing, is sheer hypocrisy and mostly meant to maximize Apple’s profits, something we have no doubt Apple is more than capable of doing.

This is more like a scam–return your iPad and buy and iPad 2 so apple sells more iPads in general. And does apple then part the devices out, never seeing their destination, just to reuse the parts? not like the ipad 1 & 2 have that many dissimilar parts lmao.
