Would be a good step to have those higher resolutions BUT just as importantly or perhaps even more importantly would like them to get the 'Frame-Rates' up to speed when running games and 3D intensive applications. At present frame-rates constantly suffer abysmally with half decent 'detail' settings, this often leaves you having to set most all the detail sliders to low if running at your display's top resolution and if you have the Thunderbolt Display attached running at its maximum resolution, then one is left expediency a very nauseous 'strobe-like' frame rate.

For the 15" MBP, it's exactly the right resolution. The current res is 1440x900 and 2880x1800 is your basic DPI doubling. Existing apps that aren't designed for the 2x res will simply be pixel doubled and won't appear any worse.

This has been speculated for a long time now.
