I agree with your Birthday comment: Social networking sites, ironically, make people more insular, more selfish and less aware of other people as individual human beings. It's a strange phenomenon but it really does appear that people simply become self-obsessed. It also appears that the more frequent they post, the less that actually have to say; The more friends they accumulate, the less interaction they have with these ‘friends’ as individuals: everything they post ends up being a statement about nothing in particular, addressed to 'the group' rather than to any one friend and it all end up being very tedious.
I have a suspicion that ‘Social Networks’ need to evolve a bit before they become truly sociable places. Right now they are just smalls bill-boards for people to advertise how great they think they are and why everyone should listen to them and their ego driven opinions (yes, I am aware of the irony as I type this).
In the old days, if you had friends and you remembered their birthday and you would call them, or send them a card, or do the deed in person, face-to-face, with a shake of their hand or a hug. If nothing else it was an excuse to ‘cop a quick squeeze of the girl you’ve always fancied but never had the nerve / chance / good fortune to get off with… You can’t do that on Twitter!

Awesome! Another great article from Philip Berne.

I have to agree with all resolutions. I do #3 and #4 but definitely I will try the others to keep humanizing my life.

To 2011 I hope to get less digital experiences. Don't get me wrong, gadgets and internet are great but people and they knowledge are priceless.

Happy New Year to everyone at SlashGear! Cheers!

What a great list. I really hate #1, especially for family - my family often wants to call just to shoot the breeze, and that *really* annoys me, mainly because my sister is a stay at home mom- she has no comprehension of the idea of 'being at work'. 3 and 4 are ones that I do anyways, lol. I hate when people talk on the phone at restaurants and such. Not only is it incredibly rude to those you're with, but it's distracting, as well.

It's funny that you list #5 - that's a variation of my personal motto, that technology should enrich and enable our real lives, and not get in the way. I found myself often forcing myself to behave a certain way in order to get technology to 'work', which isn't how it should work at all. You start with your real life and find technology that enriches and enables that - making things easier, letting you do them faster, etc.
