Your sarcasm is misplaced. The government is going to use anonymous as an excuse for taking our freedoms away, just as they have used 9/11 and terrorism as an excuse to pass the Patriot Act, and form fascist bureaucracies like Homeland Security/TSA.

If you think anonymous is helping to expose the truth of government, you’re mistaken. Most people already know that the government lies to their faces every day. For every good thing anonymous might do, they do 5 stupid things for their own amusement, and that’s why I don’t support the little bastards.

VIVA ANONYMOUS! Its anonymous that struck back after the SOPA/PIPA bill was introduced. AND a good reason why SOPA/PIPA isn’t back on the table just yet. Sitting back and letting the government regulate your every move to “protect” you is not what this country was founded on nor what it should become. Sad that people believe that ANONYMOUS is here to harm people. Its here to fight back against big government, putting a tether on dog rather than letting it roam free. First Name you truly astound me. To be so ignorant to the truth. Were there other organizations (like ACLU) involved? Yes. We worked along side them to spread the truth. Then those of us on Reddit, and us alone, started the GoDaddy boycott that first brought media attention to SOPA and PIPA. Then, it was us on Reddit who first suggested and planned on blacking out. SOPA and PIPA would not have been known the way it was were it not for Anonymous and Reddit. I’m not stating that we are truly a significant force, merely that if we had not done what we did, there’s no doubt in my mind it would have passed without the large majority of the population knowing they even existed. I, the only Anonymous member I know, was the first of the people I know to know about the bills, I was the first to take action of the people I know. We, Reddit and Anonymous, are two of those groups that put not just U.S. congress but the entire government under the microscope every day. Do not ignore or discredit us, we are just as capable as any other organization.

The majority of computer users lack basic computer privacy and security knowledge that can protect them from groups like Anonymous. I believe the NSA is right and maybe even over estimating the time it would take for Anonymous have this capability. I had the opportunity to analyze threats to a large US power grid company’s SCADA gateways. These gateways provided access to the computers that manage the power grid. The bottom line is the power grid is at the mercy of the education and knowledge employees have about computer privacy and security. The most likely route to gaining control of the power grids is by getting control of an employee’s computer. Anyone who uses a computer needs some basic, non-computer-geek speak knowledge about computer privacy and security.

I don’t trust that the politicians have you or my best interest at heart. And I do think corporate greed is destroying the world. But I don’t think that the government is trying to turn us into N. Korea. I do think that all of the people commenting in this forum are engaging in fear mongering at a more paranoid level. I’ve yet to lose a single freedom in my 43 years on this planet that my grandfather had when he was a kid. At least not any that was worth fighting for. Sure, kids have to wear helmets when biking and I have to wear a seat belt when driving, but is that really a loss of freedom? What I do know is that I have to change my password for my company’s payroll account every 90 days because of people like Anonymous. I know that Anonymous and their friends over at wikileaks steal Government emails and release them doing damage to this nations ability to conduct business in the world. And I’m not talking about exposing coverups. I’m talking about when the US diplomat to a foreign nation emails home and says his counterpart in country X is an imbecile and that is made public, that harms our interest with no justifiable reason. There are secrets that do need to remain secret.

If corporations and government want to protect against hacks, they can (perhaps except ddos?). I hate these reports that include any and all possible things indirectly related to hacking or computer use to give huge sums of money, like 400 billion dollars. And a threat? So far, hackers have done little that seems to be a threat, compared to what they could do. The only thing the US is afraid of is hackers uncovering the huge cover up that is the corporate world is in bed with the government, intimately.

It should completely INFURIATE you to listen to our government throw around 9/11 for fearmongering tactics and then classify Anonymous in the same group as “the terrorists that turn airplanes into cruise missles” when enough information has been leaked since the attacks to basically show in full detail how 9/11 was nothing more than a false flag Op adopted from the cuban missile crisis so the Bush administration could rally support for invading the middle east! Seriously people, you can’t just read the official “Government Report” and think ‘no, our gov. couldn’t have anything to do with it… they said so themselves” Really!?! In the last 10 years how many times have you heard something on the news that has scared you? Fear mongering (or scaremongering or scare tactics) is the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end. The feared object or subject is sometimes exaggerated, and the pattern of fear mongering is usually one of repetition, in order to continuously reinforce the intended effects of this tactic, sometimes in the form of a vicious circle. Terror/scare tactics by the NSA. We may be a loose collective filled with people that have different opinions, but not even the people that hack for lulz would shut down the power grid. That’s too destructive. Only hackers who want a fire sale would do that, and none of us would go that far. Just fear mongering from the government to try to pass an oppressive bill. They’re trying to make you sacrifice your own privacy and security online by making Anonymous look like a “terrorist organization”. Wikipedia didn’t know about it until Anonymous and Reddit brought attention to it. Trust me, I was there when it all went down. We (anons and Redditors) had been posting about it for several months before Wikipedia caught on. It was also us on Reddit that started the blackout. If it wasn’t for us, Wikipedia and Google would’ve only been against it, should they have known about it at all, instead of actually doing something. You’re welcome, ingrate.
