Sad to say that's true. The underdog doesn't have too much of a chance these days with money thrown around by companies. That's why I highly respect Linux and the masses behind it that helped it rise to the top in the world of supercomputing and servers. But Mcirosoft dominates the desktop market because their money means more advertising to the less technologically informed public then research scientists and computer engineers who contributre to developing Linux.

There's nothing wrong with that but it's not exactly respectable if a company manages to get on top with a great deal of help from throwing money around and less from the actual quality and merit of the product itself. For example, Microsoft could pay Pc companies some money if those companies may consider increased support for Linux. They could afford to do so. Linux or most Linux groups can't afford to do anything like that. Sadly to say, money does get you places but makes the journey or leap rather, much less respectable then when an underdog rises to the top by merit of quality.

It's much more impressive to think that free and open-soruce Linux has managed to make its way onto American nuclear submarines, CERN, the most powerful supercomputers in the world, and many servers. Linux got to the top of supercomputing and servers not by throwing money around but by sole merit of its traits and quality of its design. If Linux was funded and backed completely by some billion dollar company, the achievement is much less respectable.
