Android Wear speakers activate today

Starting this afternoon, Android Wear smartwatches will be able to use their built-in speakers. Just so long as they have them installed. Users who have a Huawei Watch or the ASUS ZenWatch 2 (49mm) will be getting an Android Wear update that may surprise them. Believe it or not, these two watches (and some future watches) have a speaker inside that hasn't yet been activated. After this update from Google, it's go time.

The update will bring on the ability to "make calls and listen to messages with speaker support." At this time it is not clear whether or not speakers will be able to work for all apps or just ones Google has approved so far.

Apps that wish to gain access to built-in speakers on Android Wear devices will need to update their innards to take advantage. Prepare yourselves for oddities in the near future.

For now, you'll be able to make and take calls over Bluetooth. According to Google, a good app to try to use for this new set of features (listening to audio/video messages at least), is Glide.

You can find Glide on the Google Play app store right this minute.

Let us know if you see the update to your Android Wear watch – we'll be watching!
