Great info! Thanks! It headed me in the right direction in android version 2.3.4 the setting was in the settings database but in the location;
sqlite> update secure set value=0 where name=’lock_pattern_autolock’; sqlite> .exit
note ~~~~~ the setting was in “secure” instead of system. otherwise worked great!

Boot into recovery -> adb 

adb -d shell 
sqlite3 data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db  
sqlite> update system set value=0 where name=’lock_pattern_autolock’; sqlite> .exit

That will turn off the lock screen.

What about that device that plugs into the phone and downloads the information from it? Read a story last year about some law enforcement agency that had ordered or purchased them. Would that not work?

To prevent clever “smudge crackers”, you can obviously either clean the screen regularly like you should, or make the pattern “cross over” your typical page swiping gesture. That way, it’s hard to tell which smudge portion is the pattern and which portion is just part of the page swipe.

Although complicated, it is very possible to get around android locks. I have successfully hacked into several ipod touches and iphones of various generations. The techniques i’ve used included jailbroken devices and a few programs like, universal viewer to decipher the code, and an SSH program like winscp or ifunbox. This article makes them sound so secure but i assure, they are not.

as far i know they just want the call and sms logs, thus any use of reset will erase it

I’m not sure what the author means by “PC operating systems are easily cracked”. Anyone who cares about data security will encrypt the entire PC drive and the FBI can’t really crack it as long as the passphrase isn’t in a rainbow table. The people who make rainbow tables seem to door a poor job of covering the entire unicode password space.

Anyway, the PC processors can handle larger encryption keys and are ultimatley much more secure.
