You're right ,it's not hurting Andriod one bit. It's can be a pain in the ass for app developers but that hasn't stopped them from developind/porting. It's great propaganda for Andriods very scared competition but for those who know better it's just a hollow argument. The only Andriod users who think it's an issue were never well suited for Andriod to begin with. You know the ones i'm talking about, the type of consumer who spend alot of money on things they know nothing about. They buy a skined device and wonder why they don't get fast updates then they go online and bitch about the company they choose, all along displaying their own stupidity. Dumb people should just by an iphone and be done with it, leave the Andriods for the intelligent consumer.

@someinternetdude:disqus Thats only a year. It would make some sense if Apple had a larger head start (2.5-3 yrs) it would explain why it has twice as many downloads. And your crazy to think that the App store isn't moving as quickly. Its not just iPhones downloading apps. you might catch up when android gets temple run hahaha.

I might by the new iPhone when it comes out. Ill just sell my 4s when the time comes. But if i wanted i could keep it and know that ill be running the latest OS 2-3 years later. I was happy with my Android device for a couple years also, I rooted my phone too. Then I got the 4s (vzw) stock loved it (only thing i missed from android is the turn by turn navi but theres an App for that). Jailbroke it and the rest is history, I could careless about rooting and roms anymore. I just love tweaking my iPhone and downloading cracked apps. Again I was happy with my rooted android phone but im even happier with my jailbroken iPhone 4s. I promise you, you would take MY iPhone over your Android phone any day.

That's cuz the new smartphone customers are newbies who don't know any better. You find people everywhere, however, who are former Android phone users and are now iPhone users. You rarely see it go the other way.

When the smartphone critical mass of dumb phone joiners is over , just like in PC's. You are gonna see a big shakeout.

And super happy with it.. :)

For the life of me i cant figure out how this so called fragmentation is hurting Android, at 250 million Android devices, 700,000 activations per day, 11 billion Market downloads I'm not seeing this problem hurting. And its been talked about for like two years now. From now on I wanna see proff like bigfoot, or it didn't happen.

My wife and I both have 3-year-old smart phones. Mine is an iPhone 3G which has received multiple updates over the years. Hers is a Droid Eris which has received no updates and still runs the 2.1 it shipped with. The differences in user experience have grown over the years. Example: I can watch Netflix on my phone. She can't. For that and many other similar reasons, the Android phone appears to her to be vastly inferior and she now plans to buy an iPhone next time around. My wife isn't a techie either--very definitely what one might consider a casual or average smart phone user. But she can plainly see the difference in user experience and has grown to regret buying an Android-based phone. Anyone who thinks "average" users don't notice this is delusional.

I'm stunned by Chris Burns' view on this topic. "You get what you pay for" ? Seriously?
First of all, Android is free. No cost to the manufacturer and none for anyone else in the Android food chain. The trouble is, most manufacturers feel the need to layer-on to Android with their own custom code which in itself creates more fragmentation. This is where cost comes into the equation - a cost that the manufacturers take on, and which customers must pay - both in dollars and a lack of upgrade options. Let's be clear on this: Google could probably support upgrades of Android on every device that runs older versions *if* they hadn't been saddled with a custom layer. But because they are, Google's hands are tied. They can't force manufacturers to upgrade their users and they can't do it themselves because of HTC Sense or Samsung TouchWiz or whatever. Let's call this what it is - a fork in the Android ecosystem created by manufacturers that has resulted in obsolescence whether intentional or not. It's this practice that makes people run straight over to the Apple store where at least things are easier to understand.... and you really do get what you pay for.

As a fellow owner of this phone I can safely say...who cares. I have a windows 7 laptop and I'll get a windows 8 (or whatever they have out at the time) laptop when I upgrade my device.
This is why I think Windows Phones are the best. The people's no.1 complain about the iPhone is "choices". Many people including me cannot stand the smallish 3.5" screen. But luckily with WP7 you have the choice of Android with the reliability of iOS! My first gen WP7 HTC has received like 10 updates in the past year and 1 major update. Even though I do not get the snappy dual core processors and tons of apps, it makes me happy that my 15 month old phone is still supported! It also makes me very happy to know that I will get at least 1 more major update this year whether it be Tango or Apollo. Also with WP7 you can still support the company you like! I was always a HTC fan and I can still purchase their WP7 phones and also stay away from this fragmentation at the same time. Isn't that great?
