The excitement over Android Donut may have been premature, as new information regarding not only the fresh code’s functionality but also its position in the platform ecosystem emerges. According to an Android framework engineer, Donut is not set to roll into Android OS 2.0; furthermore, he claims it will not include multitouch support.
The news demands distinction between Donut – which, like Cupcake, is a development test build, used to trial new functionality, patches and other tweaks – and full, official releases. Not all of Donut’s functionality will make it into whichever official Android release comes next. More details over at Android Community.

Thanks Yahel,
We’ve seen a few hacks to enable multitouch in Android; my experience with the HTC Hero, which enabled it, was that hardware support is only half the issue. You also need the software to support it in order for it to be of any use: on the Hero, that meant the browser would recognize pinch-zoom but the Google Maps app would not. That’s a breakdown in UI consistency, which usually leads to user confusion.
