I completely agree, but I dont think it is possible without alienating other manufacturers.. It makes better sense for the sake of Android in the long run for Google to use another manufacturer for the nexus line..... if they do as you say they risk loosing them. I say this with a big UNFORTUNATELY!!!!

I have a Windows phone, and I'm not sure I've seen that "gift" icon before. Share always seems to be found as text in a context menu in the native UI, and the one app I have that has an actual 'share' button uses a different icon... looks like a pair of interlocking hands.

I think a lot of the confusion has been that various sources has meant different things when they talked about fragmentation. For some it was the version products was shipped with. For some the various custom UIs. and for others again the various shapes and sizes of devices available.

Needs to be mandated (and no, that will not turn them into Apple)
In addition, they still need to curate their own market, and get updates out quicker.

Still hope that with the Motorola purchase Google considers getting into the hardware business and create a halo line of pure Android goods. A line of devices that the customer will know; shall have a product cycle they can count on, timely updates, and hopefully, the best hardware.

At least the first one has become a bit of a web convention, a lot of sites use it. But I never thought about what it visually represents. Not as literal as one would hope... Especially since Google's guides recommend using practical imagery over symbols and buttons

I think it's "share". And I agree, all icons are pretty misleading - I can understand the reasoning behind the upper one. But the other two? The one from iOS (I think?)...erm...? And the one from windows is probably a "gift"?!
