The problem was Apple’s website, they had some screwy CSS for which the most standardized browsers displayed wrong. Opera(Win7), Chrome(Win7/Ubuntu), and Androids all displayed it wrong. They’ve since changed some CSS on their website. Way to knock Apple ;)

Do an Acid3 or any html5 test on both phones, the Android will win both tests.

Actually…. here’s what makes Android faster on the web on almost every device vs anything from Apple;
1) Garden Walled Network means like AOL Hell and Compuserve’s World Within World, all traffic is encrypted and tunneled through Apple’s closed network Server Farms. Where Fast is never fast enough to overcome the built in bottlenecked on and off ramps!
2) Apple has yet to include a Dual Band Wifi Direct (no router needed) Radio in any of their devices. Even though latest Airport Wifi devices use both 2.4 and faster 5.0 ghz bands. If these tests were run using a router with both bands active, the results would have been even worse for Apple’s iPhone 4!
3) No matter what Apple and the testers say now, the App used runs on Apple’s latest Browser engine using their embedded Nitro Javascript Engine. That’s exactly what’s reported in original results. Somehow the testing team changed their mind. Most likely after Apple had a heart to heart talk with them in how to use Apple’s RDF (Reality Distortion Field) Mis-information Technology to irradiate (eradicate) the TRUTH!

Test results are faulty iPhone runs off of a lower processor speed than the Nexus and Galaxy. Of course those would be faster to make test results as accurate as possible the iPhone should be compared to an Android phone that has the same processor speed.

Its also interesting that you can use more websites on Android’s browser than with an iPhone and you can download stuff on an Android (Safari does not allow podcast, MP3, video etc download at all!!)

The menu works just fine on a HTC Legend in portrait mode. Gingerbread via Cyanogen 7. The search field far right on the menu doesn’t seem to work, but menu links are rendered and useable.

These ubiquitous browser speed tests are starting to get annoying. When you start paying more attention to how fast a page loads instead of the contents of the page and continue living your life, something’s off. Location, connection speed and hop count are going to be more of an influence anyway, as well as client and server system load.

Well, that menu doesn’t render in Opera 11.01 on win7 either. I think that tells more about how skilled the web designers @ Apple are.

this is a dumb article. there are third party browser on both platforms. if you dont like safari, too slow download opera mini which blows it away in terms of speed. the same goes for android you can download diff 3rd party browsers too.
on my iphone i got opera mini, and it boosted the speed by at least half

Hmm. Well when I worked at Vzw and tested all the new android devices, not one would render the links at the top.
I have two friends with evo’s and neither of them render the links in portrait.
It’s just a dark gray bar at the top.
Can’t use any of the links. Must go landscape for them to work at all.
My friend just got hers a few days ago and I tried it and it didn’t work.
Maybe both phones are defective out of the box.

I don’t know how anyone could consider this test even remotely scientific. This test seems flawed to me because of the fact that they didn’t use the actual browsers but also used their software, as they are a firm who wants to sell software to optimize websites.

None the less the inconsistencies in the report definitely show these test are in now way scientific nor conclusive as they claim.

Its probably safe to say 99.9999999999999999999% of smartphone users could care less about this point in time comparison. I’d hazard to say even a couple surfing the web on separate devices wouldn’t even notice a difference.

Us techies eat this kind of data up like it craps gold but in reality it means very little as long as advancements continue to be made, which both are quite good at even if they leap frog each other in speed.

Functionality and overall experience of the device is what matters.

As far as iphone is concerned for “better user experiance” i would have to say that safari is constantly closing my tabs because it has run in a low memory.

Try this test. Take an Evo with that Monster screen. In Portrait mode, go to http://www.apple.com
The Evo doesn’t render the links at the top! and it’s the same, I bet, on every Android phone.
You have to turn the Evo to landscape mode to get those links to render and be usable.
Faster doesn’t mean better.
The iphone could be just as fast if it didn’t have to finish loading usable content on the page.
