@The Gnome

Like we don't have to live through hundreds of articles about the "Verizon iPhone" as if it's so different, Apples' earning call, iPad rumors, iPad 2 rumors, iPad 3 rumors, iPhone rumors & more iPhone rumors, rumors about Steve Jobs, etc. . . Apple gets 25% of the tech press--that's ridiculous for one company that doesn't even have that many different products.

So, deal with the fact that there is a new name in town. . . just move on and don't read it if you don't like it, you have plenty of Apple news to take to the toilet with you, enjoy.

"The top end best OS" is totally a matter of opinion and not fact. Android, WebOS and Symbian actually have plenty going for them that they do better than iOS right now. Also, please don't say that they have the best phone either, because that is also a matter of opinion. There are actually better spec'd and even more expensive phones out from a few manufacturers than the current iPhone 4 flagship model and new ones are coming out every day.

I love how when the particular platform you like is in the lead, numbers are important, but as soon as it starts to fall behind, numbers don't mean anything anymore...

Numbers mean a lot. Why? Because the more phones are out there with a particular OS, the more money that developers will see that they can potentially make by developing for it. Apple has been the beneficiary of an exploding numbers game for the last couple of years, now it's someone else's turn.

Haven't we lived through this announcement like a hundred times already? How many more times will this get milked. I actually look forward to the day when Android is way outpacing iOS so we don't have to listen to this.

Of course iOS will continue to be the top end best OS and Apple will make the most, but apparently thats not as blog worthy as meaningless numbers...

I'm like Apple, but even I understand that Android will become market leader, and here are a few reasons.

1) Apple sells one device, while Android has several manufacturers who build several models.

2) The iPhone is a high class model, while Android has devices in all price categories.

3) Android is available everywhere, while the iPhone isn't available on every network, as a matter of fact it's not even available in all countries.

4) Lots of people just hate Apple, and Android is the best alternative they can get

5) There is no "buy one get one free" promotion on iPhones

Now, even if the iPhone starts selling all over the world on avery single network available, it will still have quarters where it simply will plunge under Android numbers.
That's because Android powered devices have lots of new product cycles spread over all 12 months, due to all the models available.
The iPhone on the other hand only updates once a year, which will decrease sales in the 1st two quarters of the year (at least at this moment).

It's more than obvious that iOS and Android will be the leading mobile OSs in the future, question is, will Windows, RIM, Nokia and HP/Palm be able to survive, and how important will they remain/become?

It's operating systems for smartphones not form factors and it is relevant because that shows the overall progress of an operating system in the market--same reason we look at Windows, OS X, and Linux.

As for Apple, it is their choice to sell only one smartphone line. And if you want to compare smartphone companies than Apple still doesn't come out ahead. Attempting the weak argument of one phone vs another is flawed because the iPhone is a line of smartphones developed by one company that chooses to make only one line. Therefore, we could compare Nokia smartphones to Apple smartphones if that makes you happier, or Samsung, LG, etc. . .

I hate articles that talk about that...

Android covers all carriers, with literally hundreds of phones. Of course theres going to be more android devices. Now, compare phone to phone, and then the real winner shows.

And no, Im not an apple fanboy, Im very happy with my original droid, but its just annoying to see people saying Android sells more phones than Apple..
