No where does it say to keep your face between the dots. You’ll find this out for yourself when you get it (if you do) it does require moving it around to line your face up.

Thank you for your comment — it’s not about whether I’ve used Android for a while, but you realized that ICS is a whole new platform where Google changed nearly everything?

The experience I’m going through will be similar to the experience many owners will go through so it’s authentic and unpolished. If you’re unhappy, don’t watch it.

You also learned that if you can’t keep your face in the dots for 5 seconds that the phone won’t unlock for you, and you should blame the phone.

Everytime something goes wrong you place blame on the phone. And you said that you can’t launch the camera from the lockscreen and then later when you changed it to slide unlock you found it? This “preview” if you will makes ICS look like it has many bugs when in fact it is user error. It is obvious that you have not used Android for a while. I appreciate you taking time to make this preview but please, for the sake of ICS, learn how to use it and present all of the features without making it look like there are issues with the OS.

Thanks for the second vid, it clears up one thing. It appears that voice dictation behaves differently depending on the context. From your first video, you had demoed it using the search bar and it had only captured text up until the moment you paused, and then performed a search. That makes sense since a search query would normally involve only a brief string of text. In the second video, you are using it in an email text field, it which case it allows you to continue speaking until you specifically terminate it. Since the user’s intent in email usually involves more that a few words it doesn’t cut off whenever you pause.

FYI, voice dictation is suppose to recognize when you stopped and wait for you. That’s one of the best feature next to real-time of course.

If I drive my car into a telephone pole because I’m moving my hands all around on the wheel and not putting proper care into actually driving the car, then yes, I would be “holding it wrong.” It doesn’t matter how well the car actually performs. That’s an obvious case of user error.

In this review, if you watch closely, it almost appears that he’s “driving” it *intentionally wrong*. Honestly, I don’t believe that’s the case (its more likely travel fatigue) but I’ve seen many other reviews in which these features perform as desired with more consistency, when used under normal working conditions (ie, not blinding stage lights). The very fact that he IS a tech writer means that we should expect better results. If, for instance, I asked my grandma to give me a feature tour of an iPhone (thought to be the most user friendly interface), it would be a total train wreck and the device would appear to be harder to operate then it actually is… but Vincent is not my grandma and I know he can do better.

Ergh… Dude, if your going to review a phone learn how to drive it prior to the review? When you pause for 3 seconds when issuing a voice command, the AI is going to assume you’ve finished talking, as it did in this demo.. You frustrated the crap out of me watching you drive this phone, it was like watching my mum try to use new technology….Painful… You certainly did the phone no phone favors in respect to the new users who will now assume the phone doesn’t work when in reality it was just reviewed poorly. When I wasn’t wincing and cringing during the review one thing I did notice was how much slicker the new Android interface looks when compared to the Iphone you held up briefly beside it. It’s nice to see Android lift the eye candy factor a little, Iphone have had that one over us Phandroids for some time but now it’s looking,………….well,….old and haggard really…. Please review this again (or get someone more technology literate too), and do it properly this time.. Give the phone and the OS the justice it deserves.

iphone did not have it first and it is not the only one. HTC has done it already…Also, the quick controls are already on the Grid10 and Grid4 devices. WHY are you hiding your password? lol, what are we gonna do? Jump through our screens and take the phone..? lol

Jon oBrien just summed up what I was going to write. This is quite a poor review, considering how well the phone probably works if you let it. Keep your head still when you are registering it. How the hell is it supposed to recognize you otherwise? Also – if you pause during a google-voice command, it will take it as that you stopped. Don’t bash the OS if you cant work it. what about custom sizeable widgets – you seemed to not bother with that at all. and then you run out of things to say!

Vincent I usually like your reviews, but I think you need to chill out on the coffee! When programming in your face for the unlock screen you move around your hand so frantically, dodging your head in and out of the frame at various angles, and then you marvel when it doesn’t work. Then, you claim the voice dictation failed, however, it had actually written what you said up until the point when you paused… cuing the system to stop listening. Lastly, your hands seemed to be shaking so schizophrenically while probing around the device causing some of your erroneous touches to appear instead as poor touch screen sensitivity. NOT trying to nitpick… this is just such an epic phone, please do it justice by slowing down to review it properly. //end rant

I am a big fan of iOS but I also enjoy my Android Motorola phone. I haven’t used a Windows phone. While many have strong preferences and mock other operating systems, I think competition is what makes every operating system better. Be thankful for choice, even for the choices you would never choose!
