when they first talked about ice cream sandwich just after honeycomb was released it was meanted that the phone manufactures could turn off or on the onscreen controls. Assuming they turn them off will jsut means the current hardware keys will act as they currently do.

I have the TF 1, and it's already a viable laptop replacement. I use it for sales presentations, taking notes, etc. and it always draws attention. I use it as is, and sometimes plug my MX Performance mouse into the USB port, and it pretty much turns into a laptop. It's quick, I've expanded the memory with a pair of memory cards, it streams content, backs everything up to unlimited cloud storage....

I've dialed down the screen brightness to about 30%, and it gets phenomenal battery life. It gets used every day, and I think my best week, I got 21 hours use off one charge of the dock + tablet.

Definitely getting my use out of it.

I get much more use out of my Transformer at work than my coworkers do out of their iPad 2's.

Netbooks are small, light, can easily run for hours, and are cheap but still cover all the computing basics the average person could need on the go.

Basically, not everyone needs or can necessarily afford anything more powerful than a netbook. While there are also people who just want a secondary computer or something they can more easily risk damaging or losing or just to experiment with.

Then there are those who just want something they can feel free to completely customize as they want. Such as linux users and hobbyists. Many early netbooks for example have been re-purposed into things like car computers, kitchen cabinet computers, home made tablets, etc. or used for things like setting up ham radio based networks or even robotics.

So take your pick, there are many reasons to use a netbook. Those reasons may not fit your social circle but they do fit others.

I entirely agree. I've actually been wondering this myself. I like the big screen on my s2, i don't want to lose a significant portion of it when i already have physical buttons. This is an issue for 99% of android phones, so i'd hope google has a good solution. I can't believe no one has mentioned this anywhere else.

I noticed there's no more menu key. So what will happen to the current apps that require it?

My guess is that the OS would know if the phone has hardware buttons and hide the software buttons if it does or give users the option to hide them. And phone should operate with the buttons just like they have been.

I'm curious about how far advanced Android has gotten. I'm an Android Newbie (recently purchased an older Nexus One) and have seen videos of Honeycomb running on the ASUS Transformer. Loving everything I'm seeing, especially on the Transformer.

I've seen external hard drives, microSD cards, etc... all plug in and accepted on Honeycomb. Does anyone else feel that ICS + TF2 is now a viable netbook replacement (or close to it)? Perhaps this question might make a good post for Slashgear...

One concern: should any of the current android phones be updated to 4.0, what is going to happen with the 'system bar'? Because current android phones already have back, search, home and menu buttons, so to have another back and another home icon seems pretty pointless, and a waste of screen space.
Perhaps it could be configured so for existing android phones (with the four buttons) the 'multitasking' icon could be triggered by holding menu, or holding back (which would let it work with the 3 button Samsung Galaxy models), and so removing the 'system bar'?
