'Anakin' is now one of the top 1,000 US baby names

The U.S. Social Security Administration has revealed that "Anakin" is now one of the top 1,000 baby names in the United States. The administration released its latest list of popular baby names in the United States this summer, and we see more than a handful that are likely inspired by popular culture — Khaleesi, for example, outranked Anakin last year in the top 1,000 baby name chart. Still, Anakin is gaining ground and joining the likes of "Luke" and "Leia" among the top charts.

Luke, of course, is a name likely chosen more often for religious reasons than ones related to Star Wars, so it isn't too surprising that name sits at #28 among the top 1,000 boy names in 2014. Leia sits further down and may have Star Wars to thank for its sustained popularity: the name ranks at #509 on the girl names chart.

'Anakin' only barely managed to slip into the listing: the name is ranked at #957 on the boy names chart, beating out the likes of Baylor, Emmet and more. The name was ranked at 1,234 in 2013, however, representing a pretty big jump year-on-year. A total of 218 boys were named Anakin in the US last year.

Another name that seems to have been affected by popular culture is "Arya" from Game of Thrones. The name was ranked at 277 on the girl names chart in 2013, and jumped to a ranking of 216 last year, with 1,544 girls being named Arya.
