1) AMD's card may be a HD 6670, but it's by no means the card you see in your computer. It's optimized for use in a gaming console. Also, the 6670 is actually a design specification for card builders to build from. AMD designs the card, sells the specs, and MSI XFX and other graphics cards manufacturers build them. That's why the 6670 can ship with different core clock speeds, types of ram, etc. As long as it fits the spec sheet the manufacturer can call it a 6670.

That said, expect a graphics card much smaller in size that is far less power demanding and optimized for a small case. They get away with large cards 1 for marketing (bigger stick) and 2 they assume custom builders will use a full-size/mid-size tower that can hold the larger card. (bigger is easier to build/mass produce).

2) as Jalexoid said, developers can optimize their programming specifically for the hardware. Right now a great deal of PC development goes into creating cross-hardware software. This is why only the high end cards are capable of playing a game the old PS3 from the original release batch runs with little difficulty in comparison.

Look at original PS3 games versus current PS3 games. They don't compare. A prime demonstration is Modern Warfare 1 2 and 3. They are designed for the same console, but each one has better and better graphics as the developers have worked on improving performance on the same hardware.

AMD's Radeon 6000 series is new, and developers haven't had time to create software that properly utilize their powerful hardware. As these new consoles are released, we'll see more and more games release with mind-blowing graphics, until the process repeats and we're back here. Arguing about the next amd graphics card that won't perform as advertised.

What? How the hell did you get that from my comment? If you actually read my comment, you would see that all I said was that I'll believe these claims of the next Xbox's graphical power when I actually see some gameplay footage. At this point, it's all talk; similar to how Sony claimed the Vita's graphics would be better than the PS3, when in reality it doesn't come close.

I've been spoiled by games like Pixeljunk Shooter. First on my wish list is realistic interactive water in 3D in real time.

I know it's not too much to ask; from my own experimentation I'm certain the 360's CPU was powerful enough for high-quality 2D fluid, though curiously (to my knowledge) no game developers tried. It really is a trivial algorithm and even lends itself very well to GPU acceleration (though, via XNA at least, the Xbox GPU wasn't really fast enough at the sorting routines needed for an all-on-GPU solution).

AMD's beefiest PC video card is as large as a PS3, sucks 415 W of power, and delivers nowhere near the same level of detail as Avatar. So is AMD offering Microsoft a technology that they don't even use on their own CPUs/GPUs?
I still remember how the PlayStation 2 was supposed to offer the same graphics as "the phantom menace" movie... (or something like that).
