It’s not just a die shrink, but a whole new architecture (GCN) with improved Tesselation and compute. And the promises are real. 7970 blows away GTX580 in all respects. While we can’t compare 7970 with 580 as it’s an older architecture, AMD has, this time, come up with an excellent and overall competitor – in all respects.

If you look at these specs, you see that the 7870 is just a die shrink of the 6970. The 7900 series is pretty much brand new. I think the specs look a little bit fake.
