AMD breaks Teraflop barrier with a single processor

AMD unveiled their first “Teraflop in a Box” system this past week. This is a significant milestone for the chip manufacturer.

Most machines that are capable of performing more that 1 trillion floating-point calculations per second (or Teraflops) are usually more than one system combining processing power to achieve this. The system that AMD demonstrated was powered by a single Opteron processor running Windows XP Professional.

AMD expects that the same technology to be used in a variety of fields such as energy, financial, environmental, medical, scientific, defense and security organizations around the world.
