>>with higher resolution displays for more comfortable viewing and reading, <<

"more comfortable" compared to lower res displays on those same devices, perhaps.
Not CLOSE to as comfortable as reading on an e-ink screen like the Kindle. Not for me, anyway, and not for many others. The iPad can do wonderful things, and if those wonderful things are worth the price to you, great. It can also read ebooks.
But if reading books is your main need, then a much cheaper e-ink based reader like the Kindle may beat the iPad...or any LCD tablet...for long while yet.

@Darwin, if you're into serious book reading, Kindle can't be beat. But if you're an app collector, iPad is matchless. Currently it stands at 6212 apps on a single iPad held by one Mr. mUDcAKE. Imagine the sheer fun of flipping pages on thousands of apps !! An app for each website is a 'magical' idea - feels like carrying your own website around - and they even throw in a shiny icon for free.

It's getting tiring reading on tech sites about how the iPad is going to beat out Kindle because it does so many more things than Kindle. Yes, if what you're looking for is a laptop without a keyboard, or if you're just a gadget freak who buys everything new, you're going to want an iPad. If what you want is an e-reader, the iPad is not the best choice. Most people who buy Kindles are looking for e-readers, not just to blow money on the newest gadget.

The Kindle can use many other formats than Amazons, I have tested with quite a few different ones. It isn't a tablet so it doesn't have the features that you list, but it never pretended to be one either; at the same time tablets pretend to be e-readers, something they aren't suitable for.

I agree that the screen change isn't pretty, but it never took away any of the pleasure of reading a good book; eye fatigue does, hence I never choose to read from LCD screens.

reading on kindle or ipad is a convenient thing for all , but which always make my eyes uncomfortable, so, i prefer the print book ~ But for most e-reader , Kindle is a professional e-reader~ It's cheaper, lighter, and easier to read than the iPad ~ but if you want to play games ,send email, surf the internet , watch a movie , you need to choose ipad, which will depend on one's personal preferences ! for me , i am not a e-read hobbyist but a movie enthusiast, so i get a ipad , i can enjoy any videos with my Aneesoft free ipad video converter .

Has the writer even used a Kindle? When it comes to reading books, a backlit LCD is no match to e-Ink technology. You can read hours without any kind of eye strain. My eyes start to hurt after just 15-mins on the iPad. If you're a serious book worm nothing beats a dedicated book reader. Looks like the author is not one of them.

I hate to interject with facts. They can be so confusing.
The rules aren't new. They were not completely enforced until Apple provide a payment mechanism. Now they are.
Apple will do just fine on content, better than most others.
Amazon by the way charges 70% for anything they publish on Kindle which is why you don't see much non-Amazon content there. I'm sure you will be all outraged about Amazon too now.
Amazon does not publish numbers on how many Kindles they have sold btw Lemon. Kindles only advantage is price. The screen is too small, you can only use their content and their format, black and white only, no touch screen, no apps, goofy crummy keyboard and controls. But they its cheap and you can use it in direct bright sunlight because so many people like to read that way. But if its even a little bit dark you have to buy a clunky flashlight and clip it to the Kindle. The screen blinks in a really annoying and distracting way every time you turn a page.

So yeah, other than that the Kindle has it all over the iPad.
