It sounds like a good idea since it is pretty much obvious right now that a $600 iPad cannot be beaten by a similar, $500 Android tablet. The Apple Reality Distortion Field is at full strength and $500 for a 10" tablet is too much anyways.

Can the iPad be beaten by a similarly capable Android tablet sold at $250? Quite certainly.
A $350 Kal-El tablet would also do the trick.

Gillette never actually used the razor model everyone talks about; it's a myth.

And if you can think of a way to compel people to buy enough stuff to justify selling the tablet as a loss leader then you are a genius. Go start a marketing company.

It would probably do well for them as long as they don't go so far as to put advertising on the screen like with the kindles.
A general use tablet is a different thing from a stand-alone device like a kindle.
Nobody wants ads on the home-screen of their computer, no matter how much you insist to them that the price they paid for it wasn't enough.

Now thats how you stick it to both Apple and the publishers over that whole fixed book pricing fiasco. Apple may have videos and music locked up but Amazon isn't going to part with their market share for books without a serious fight, and lucky for the consumer, this area is a area Amazon can win.
