HP's mistake was to market the touchpad as an IPad killer. They should have just called it a business tablet device because that's what it is and it performs very well as such.
Any company that takes up webos can easily create a niche for itself among businesses and academics, etc...

FOR SALE - one "slightly" abused operating system.

Apply to view, after dark, behind a slightly grubby truck with the HP logo hastily covered with Duck Tape. I think the edgy chap with dark glasses is Stephen DW, but he denies it. Mr A remains in the cab holding a baseball bat and a copy of Software Development for Dummies.

Make sure you test it. They may have mixed in some powdered Android dust to make it look better.

Not Samsung. They've got their hands full with Android and Bada and are doing fine. Bada just needs more refinement before it's ready for primetime in the US.

Android isn't 'tied to hardware now'.

Google needs hardware to develop Android better, tight partnership with its partners is one thing, and in-house hardware to develop and test so HUGE OS (#1 in the US, #1 worldwide) is another thing. webOS hasn't apps and will NOT be an instant interesting proposal. Android is selling like hot cakes, nobody will consider wp7 or webOS if they have SUCCESSFUL powerful option to produce smart devices NOW.

Amazon doesn't need webOS at all.
SAMSUNG doesn't need webOS, because it'll become a NOKIA with its OS-mess.
HTC could be interested in webOS but ONLY if it can make ALL Android apps and Google services work on this 'investment'. Or it will be a wasted money.

Nobody STANDS behind webOS, Google stands behind Android. Android vendors are also Open Handset Alliance partners, Android is an enormously large open-source project.

NOBODY will throw away hot cakes (and Ice Cream Sandwiches)))) to focus on almost dead brand, if there will not be some kind of incredible OS development/synergy opportunity to explore.

Amazon releasing a WebOS appears unusual without a ready made app ecosystem that I suspect doesn't exist. And how many devs are going to want to jump on a platform that simply doesn't work in retail? (though I still think the price of these tablets is still high at 500+ bucks. Asus Transformers were sold out at 299 with vouchers).
