I dont think so! This is not an Ipad killer. But this is going to be great because Amazon is so big and has so much to pick from contnent wise. And you cant beat the price tag. Like i said not a killer but will compete maybe the #2 on market. Once amazon sees how this goes i dont see why they wouldnt build a better fire. Get ready apple you better have a good one coming up.

A combination of what they intended for the device, there's a reason why it's still called a Kindle, and meeting the price point they wanted. They weren't shooting for a do it all tablet and they are mainly interested in marketing their services. The KF is just a platform they provide to help market those services and why they are willing to sell the KF basically at cost.

So basically, aside from helping spur on the price war, I do think there is still room in the market for the other more capable tablets and it's mostly hype that's making the KF look like more of a market leader than it really is.

As for paranoid, it's just them trying to make as much profit as they can and minimize costs. Open systems are harder to prevent pirating, makes it harder to set each device apart if you can just change them, and increases risks of customers damaging their products and increasing the costs to customer and technical services and that all cuts into their profits.

Things like the memory card readers make it easier to root these devices as well and that brings up risk of bricking them.

We don't have to like it but there are reasons why they do it the way they are.

Just Amazon services, the appeal of the customized interface if you're one of those who enjoys what they set up, and Amazon's better customer service.

Basically like Apple does with their products, most everything is set up for the user for a set user scenario and they provide the app ecosystem.

If most or none of that appeals to you then go with something like the Archos 9th gen tablet then.

Why develop wifi equivallent when there's a universally available bluetooth? It's not as if implementing bluetooth in the fire would drive the price up that much. The same with SD. A MicroSD slot adds practically nothing to the cost while these cards are great to transfer your e-books from pad to PC and back.

Again if the perception of promised performance and price are the only items ppl look for these days then they deserve to be fooled with "cheap cwappy chinese pwoducts". This device is just that. Yet another cheap plastic crappy device made in china apart from the Amazon name it adds nothing significant to the already troubled Android-eco-system. Also locked down bootloaders further disintegrates the belief that Android truely is open.

Why are all these retailers/manufacturers/telcos so paranoid?

Amazon has it's own Android Market... While locked down bootloaders are rarely fool proof...

There are work arounds for portable storage though, like a WiFi Hard Drive for example. Lack of Bluetooth may effect accessory support but they are developing WiFi equivalent keyboard and mouses that could be used instead.

Performance and price point is likely to convince many regardless of cons...

Edit Update: Looks like Amazon won't care if you root your Kindle Fire. According to an Amazon official remark to PC Mag. Though it remains how that will effect your access to their services.

People keep calling this an iPad killer.

You guys are totally miscalling this.

All Apple needs to do to kill this is to announce a $250 iPod Touch that is a 7 inch tablet and it pretty much shoots this down.

Exactly why amazon isn't letting anyone get hands on with the device... If tech reporters could dig up some if the many cons this device might have.. they couldn't hook as many people on presales...

No sd card slot.. no android market.. (my guessing next) no third party browser support, flash only supported in a skyfire style, locked down bootloader... Etc...
