No format quarrel here, Amazon has both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Sweepstakes that worth approximately $180,000 in retail prize for Hi-def fans. Amazon announced 2008 Blu-Ray and HD-DVD giveaway today that doesn’t require any form of purchase at all but it’s only eligible to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, except residents of New York, who are 18 or older. Limit one entry per person or household.

Sixty lucky winners will be picked from each format, thirty each, and winner will be rewarded with one random choice of Hi-Def player plus a hundred titles! The pick from Blu-Ray player are Sony BDP-S300, Panasonic BD-30 or Philips BDP9000 while The HD-DVD side has Toshiba HD-A30 or HD-A3 HD DVD Player. Choices of movie are not disclosed.

[updated]

“The approximate retail value of each prize is $3,000.00. Total approximate retail value of all of the prizes is $90,000.00. Winners are responsible for paying all costs and expenses related to the prizes that are not specifically mentioned, including but not limited to taxes, and any other expenses that might reasonably be incurred by winners in using the prizes. Winners are required to submit their social security number or tax payer ID to the Sponsor in order to claim a prize.”

Uncle Sam is will be taking ~$1000 though the tax if you win the prize, nothing for free after all. If you can get one of the player for $200-$300, that leaves $700-$800 for 100 movies. If you can sell $10 buck for the movies ( i assume most are cataloged titles) , the drawing is worth nothing but a hardware player. So, play with cautious.

Entry is open until 11:59:59 p.m. PT on February 12, 2008. Good Luck.

49 states + DC, but not NY? I wonder why we NY’ers are left out… I sent an email to Amazon asking that question; no reply yet.

    Amazon’s reply:

“Due to the competitive nature of our business, our policy is not to
give out information on the inner workings of our company.”

Apparently, excluding a relatively small segment of the population is one of Amazon.com’s corporate secrets for success.

    Updated on article about taxation.

Scoot, it may have something to do with gaming regulation? i don’t know, just a wild guess. Besides, it doesn’t appear to be that attractive after the tax.
