Amazon Fresh grocery delivery is coming to New York

Following related rumors, Amazon has confirmed that its grocery delivery service called Amazon Fresh will be expanding into New York — a small part of New York, that is. This follows the service's launch in San Francisco about this time last year, and will soon lead into a larger expansion that continues to grow Amazon's presence in the grocery industry. Starting Friday, those in the Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn will be able to use the service, which will eventually roll out to nearby regions.

Amazon Fresh was first made available in Seattle, where users enjoyed same-day delivery of (primarily) groceries, assuming the order was placed before 10AM local time. That availability expanded to include regions in nearby California, making for notable new markets but still confining the service to the US's west coast. The upcoming New York launch marks Amazon's first expansion into the east coast.

As a sort of promotional deal to get residents on board, any Amazon Prime subscriber will be able to use Amazon Fresh for the rest of this year, no delivery fees to be seen. Once the calendar rolls over into the new year, however, a Prime Fresh membership will be required to continue using the delivery service.

While Amazon Prime is priced at $99 USD, Prime Fresh is priced substantially higher at $299 USD, which might keep some otherwise curious users from jumping aboard the service. At some point Amazon plans to expand into other areas in Brooklyn, but when that will be wasn't stated.
