The economics seems a bit off; $9 in materials and able to sell for $20 at a profit? This is pretty labour intensive from the YouTube video, and automating the process will take a large capital investment, so either way the manufacturing costs are much higher than they are projecting.

The only way to really bring prices this low is for the taxpayer to heavily subsidize the price, and we have seen how well that works with companies like GM, Soylendra, A123 and so on...

The $20 pricing makes no sense, given that you can't buy a 12 pack of Bounty 2 ply paper towels at Sam's for under $25.. unless of course you can make a few bikes from it.

Yeah, I agree. Relying solely on cars is a great idea. We should also make them use MORE gas! And America definitely doesn't have a problem with obesity. Screw riding a bike! That's for health conscious tree huggers!

OK. First off: it looks really cool. This is the bicycle that cylons would ride. And it has a belt drive and that's cool too, even the cylons would have to agree to that.

First I thought he would have a kick ass procedure to compress the cardboard supertight in epoxy resin. But then I read it's made entirely from "organic" materials. I'm not sure what organic means here. Organic can mean these things:

- Organic farming, organic produce. This is farming according to a set of rules that uses only minimal pesticides. Unlikely this bike is made from organic produce.
- Referring to organs: liver, heart, kidneys etc. Probably not what he made the bike from.
- Carbon chain based, as in organic chemistry. This would include petrochemicals, like epoxy resin or polyester resin. This seems most likely, but why would you use that term?

So altogether, I doubt the truth level in this report. I wonder how far along development on this bike really is. Is it ready to ride around town? And what was the original source of the article? Reuters or Rueters?

In 3rd world countries alone - someone who could travel 5-10 miles in an hour to work/find work can now travel 10-20 miles in that same time - in my mind that's pretty impactful. It shrinks the world by giving everyone access to cheap transportation!

I think this is brilliant.

In 1st world countries, what if this replaced bike sharing (which isn't taking off in the US)? Now we have free bikes strewn about the city paid for by advertisers. Reduces congestion, reduces pollution, reduces gasoline consumption, and it would be a boon for the city. A lot of cities already have/are getting bike access built-in (Boston getting there, DC pretty good, San Fran, Chicago, NYC), this could really lower the cost to entry on that.

I want one of my own, but I'd love to see a world where bikes are available on every street corner if you want it!
