At the NAB event in Las Vegas, AJA has showcased its new camcorder for professionals, the Ultra HD CION, which offers, among other things, Apple ProRes. The camera is said to be the by-product of years of development, and will hit shelves some time this summer for $8,995 USD.
As far as design goes, the CION has a magnesium chassis, a material that allows for a combination of light weight and high strength. There are cheese plates for mounting accessories from third-party vendors, and an integrated shoulder mount for handling the camera.
The camera is equipped with a 4K APS-C CMOS sensor with an electronic global shutter, offering 12-stops of dynamic range and Thunderbolt. Video can be recorded in Apple ProRes 4444/422, as well as 4K, Ultra HD, 2K, and Full HD, being saved to an AJA Pak SSD in 256GB or 512GB capacities.
Said AJA's President Nick Rashby, "CION represents a new direction for AJA. Bringing this sophisticated camera to market underscores our passion to support filmmakers, broadcasters and content creators. We are incredibly proud of CION. We believe that the thoughtfully considered design, along with a powerful feature set, will make it extremely useful and versatile for productions worldwide."
