Steve Jobs had a point: The mobile network is no longer free, but charged for. Ok - my mobile has full Flash support (Nokia with Linux, and open source Flash). It is not the speed of the CPU that bothered Apple, but the excess network load for pulling up that fancy graphic that really impress nobody. The artistic value can be achieved by other means.

Apps would usually win anyway. They're usually designed for use on that kind of device, and sometimes even for that kind of hardware that your particular device has. Most flash people are expecting the target market to be on an actual computer, not a phone. Many sites use (sometimes overuse) flash and pictures for their sites AND don't make a mobile version of their site, meaning unless you've got a nice phone and 4G/wifi you're going to be going very slowly through a page, and good luck finding what you want. Once you find what you want you might not even be able to get out of their easily, because the device is still trying to finish loading the page (or the ad that started).

When everyone can do the same things (and do the same things) in HTML5 and flash, THEN the time to stop flash is then, not when people are still using it. Dropping a product during mainstream use makes sense if it is crap and people are still using it. Flash isn't crap, it's well liked, and people still make things with flash. I wouldn't say now is the time to drop such a product.

HTML 5 is an incredibly powerful language (when coupled with CSS 3 and other tech like jQuery) and can produce effects just like Flash (this is in relation to web design and animation etc, not games, although even that is getting incredibly slick now).

I've long been an Android convert but I've never had a good flash experience when it comes to watching content inline - I much prefer when it falls over to the the phones native player. People musn't forget that there are plenty of HTML 5 video players which will play inline if required, just because we don't have flash doesn't mean we can't get a lot of the content that is currently served using a flash player as the interface.

In my previous job we did a promo for someone who wanted it to work on mobile devices as well as the desktop but didn't have the budget for mobiles specific sites. As such we used HTML 5 instead to deliver a rich experience on PC's and across ALL smartphones (with minimal optimisation required). The work received multiple industry awards and was a major success.

In my opinion (and it is just that, an opinion!) people that write off HTML 5 simply haven't worked it or utilised it to it's fullest potential.

Well said. Also i think it has a bit to do with gpu pipeline ( big difference between browser plugin and Local AIR 3 engines ) . At one time flash player was to be integrated into gpu code ( since flash is really a display-list engine that duplicates what GPU workloads are ) but it failed to take hold and adobe couldnt stabilize one secure release and the hooks needed to use it in firmware.
AIR 3 solves a lot of that since its really a mashup of browser code with really well managed memory model & hardware dependency. Also there is the ARM/ nVidia thing - AIR flies like all speeding hell on wheels fast with a Tegra... besides Aoble openly saying Flash is for Games on Mobile.

Basically this all means for mobile... that APPS win, Browsers Lose. Which means App devs struggle with Publishing APPS to AIR - FLASH pro, flash catalyst, flash builder, flash export from indesign, flash authoring is a damn nightmare of crazy toolsets that cost way too much.

Bleh. when i can actually duplicate flash function in html5 CSS3 javascript jquery moo whatever junkheap of nonconforming crash prone browser prefix CSS3 nonsense... then life will be ok, but right now i do everything in both and its a damn mess. I cant hire anyone smart enough to deal with it.

You're missing the point i think. Jobs was not right in his evaluation. Any technology can be ported given time and money. Time and money are given when there is popularity and support of a product. Jobs operated on his own self interest that's why he was such a control freak. Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe's goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. Jobs really didn't want cross-platform apps that might divert attention and energy away from his application ecosystem. By not supporting flash on iOS he knew for compatibility sake that developers and companies would support what ever worked universally when it came to web. What your seeing here is not a result of technology not working effectively. Its a result of a control freak using his industry foot hold to eliminate the technology he didn't want people to use.

Only mobile devices have the limited hardware that makes it hard to run Flash. Though the issue isn't as big now with the increasingly more powerful ARM chips available now. However, it's just easier for them to use Adobe Air based apps and server side solutions as processing Flash natively puts a strain on these devices that eats up run time. Add all the hardware and software fragmentation mobile devices have that makes optimizing a never ending battle, but none of those issues effects the traditional PC platforms. So no reason for them to stop Flash entirely yet.

The thing you have to understand though is this would be true for HTML5 too if you had all those animations, videos, etc being run through it. So Adobe is just going the more energy efficient route.

It's actually a shame for them to cut Flash short. It's still being used (and as far as I've seen, used more than HTML5) and still has a big number of people using it. Yes, it's overused on some sites, and yes, it's used pointlessly on others, and yes, HTML5 is probably better in the long run. Right NOW, however, I see more sites (over)using flash (and images). Personally the only HTML5 I've seen is used by Google's sense of humor...however maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. Problem is, if I don't see HTML5 on sites I already go to often on my computer, I'm even less likely to see them on on my phone.

Are they dropping mobile flash because of Apple? Yes, I'll admit, flash might not be what is used 20 years from now. It's probably not HTML5 either. But I stand firm that Flash is still mainstream today-the time that they're cutting flash for mobile devices.

(Anyone else think that if Adobe could optimize Flash enough then they could actually beat HTML5? I'm saying they COULD, not that they will. Look at the story-they're clearly quitting long before that will happen.)

You're missing the point. It's IRRELEVANT if the people want it, if they can't make it work effectively (ie: fast, low power consumption, etc) on a mobile device. Why would they throw good money after bad and continue development of a platform that isn't ubiquitous across mobile platforms? If you have it, you'll keep it, while forward development will go into something more modern. I for one dont see why they're only stopping the development on the mobile platform. It seems logical to stop it on the desktop as well, staying with what you already have, while developing the next big thing.

The thing that stings the most is that they didn't have the intellectual honesty to do this, and admit that Jobs was right in his evaluation of the situation, while he was still alive.

Suggesting opinion is fact is wrong either way. Annoying ads for example are not limited to Flash and as HTML5 becomes more prevalent then you'll be seeing more HTML5 versions of those ads. The Flash version of the ads are just more prevalent because they still represent the larger audience.

While at least some of those sites accommodating iOS devices are doing so through Adobe's Flash Media Server 4.5, which allows Flash content to be streamed
using the iOS-compatible HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) protocol. The processing of the video is also handled by the server in those instances and let's less powerful devices play those video files. Something that helps explain the reason why Adobe feels they no longer need to support mobile devices as they're already starting to do so on the server side of things.

So it's mainly Flash games and such that mobile devices will start to be left out of. Though Adobe will still be using Adobe Air for apps, which should still allow them to give most mobile devices access to Flash content. Something even iOS can take advantage of now since Adobe has Air for iOS.

On dual core 1GHz and higher devices Flash does work fine, it's just on the lower end hardware devices that Flash doesn't work well because it was never intended for low end systems. After all it's only the next gen ARM chips coming out, starting with the Tegra 3, which even rival Intel ATOM performance. All the previous chips offered lesser CPU performance.

People who complains about flash are mostly isheeps who never really experience playing flash videos on mobile yet, and they have no idea that it plays smoothly especially on high-end android devices and very close to desktop/laptop flash player in terms of playability. They wouldnt miss it as a feature because they never had it to begin with, but all of us who have experience it considers it as a positive feature since html5 hasn't completely replaced flash player yet! Until the day html5 becomes the universal web format, flash is still of vital importance.

Guess what? 95% of shit is still shit.

Some of you guys just won't let it go and admit you're wrong. Flash is dead, has been dead for several years now. You're just too slow to catch on and still are apparently. The fact is that I have yet to see a Flash-driven site that's worth my time and any worthwhile site nowadays has an HTML5 fallback for iOS devices. I was amazed when I bought my iPad 2 thinking it was going to be a hassle watching video or interacting with Flash sites. I can't think of the last site I visited that didn't accommodate iOS.

Oh but yeah... I reeeeeeaaaaaaaaalllllly miss all those obnoxious Flash ads on my iPhone. Yes sir, indeed, that's such a huge drawback.
