For creating animation for the web, there is no tool that is equal to Adobe's flash. It has its issues but I've yet to see anything comparable to it and it has a 17 year jump on web optimized animation tools than everyone else. Flash is an established format for many creatives and it is ludicrous to expect us to just throw that away in order to embrace technologies that have proven time and again to have gross incompatibilities across browsers/viewers. Yes, even the almighty 5 is not the one number to rule them all as there are STILL incompatibilities and 'hacks' to get around them. I, for one, will not deal with those hassles and will continue to use flash and place it within the HTML 5 structure.

Flash has done more for developers, more for the internet since the original browser netscape than any other technolgy. It provides migration to mutiple platorms via air. html 5 is a format with a yet undecided codec (video and audio). The whole thing of virtual applications running seamlessy on browsers (cloud) is being limited by client based (downloaded apps). It seems to be counter intuative to the advantage of cloud applications. They don't require downloads, They don't require a lot of maintnence with 10 versions of ios, android and to be maintained. It is simple use the browser login and latest version is available. Flash enables you to do that. Apple choose not to support at least google wasn't that stupid. Hope windows 8 is smart too.
I can tell you are not a programmer. I have 12 years of JavaScript coding under my programming belt. In summary JavaScript is a limited crap language. That's the whole reason Flash was created to make up for JS limitations.

Re: "HTML 5 brings a lot to the plate". Really? How about you stop talking smack and start posting up some web site examples of HTML5 sites that are even HALF as good as a Flash site? I will give you a few years to reply.

It sounds like you are ignorant to what HTML 5 is yourself. A quick google search will inform you of the many features of HTML (figure element, header/footer, pattern attribute, Canvas Element). Yes javascript is used to draw on the canvas element, the element itself is still HTML 5.

HTML 5 brings a lot to the plate.

"Allowing companies dictact to you no-plugins is a violation of your freedom of choice."

You have no idea what you are talking about here. A cell phone is made by a company. It is THEIR choice weather or not that allow this or that on their product. You only have the choice to purchase the product or not. You can complain to the company, but they still have the choice on weather they listen or decided your complaint doesn't fit into their product.

But bottom line. Flash will not die any time soon for the desktop world.

And besides Flash, "plug-in free" also means no Silverlight, Java, and no Unity plug-in either! Microsoft couldn't break Flash's hold on RIA with Silverlight, so now they are tossing Silverlight to the curb. I have to say that both the Flash and Unity plug-ins are definitely required if you want to play cool games on the Web, especially now that Flash has Stage3D and that Unity can now mirror-port to Flash's Stage3D.

HTML5 has a video tag and that's about the only thing that is halfway useful in HTML5. But in reality HTML5 video still has streaming and stuttering problems and no DRM protection. Flash is still miles ahead of HTML5 video in features and performance.

Many people are pretty ignorant when they throw around the "HTML5" term, because what they actually mean (and are seeing is a generous mix of) is CSS and jQuery. Dumb people are just lumping CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, XML and a video tag into what they ignorantly call HTML5 when it's not.

The Flash argument has already been answered in the form of actual proof on both mobile phones and a multitude of tablets running Flash without problems. Video itself drains battery life no matter how good the technology. HTML5 video drains battery life MORE than Flash does.

Flash and other plug-ins like Unity should be a free choice on the Web. If you have any brains at all, then you would see that allowing companies to dictate to you no-plugins is a violation of your freedom of choice. Apple could have easily allowed Flash on the iPad and could have given the user the freedom of choice to turn it on or off, but everyone now knows Apple is a closed system to the Web. That's the beauty of a plug-in though, if you don't like it just turn it OFF and don't use it. A lot of people have also forgotten that JavaScript is also a plug-in. You can open up your browser and turn JavaScript off just like any other plug-in. If you turn JavaScript off, then every so-called HTML5 web site using generous mixes of jQuery goes "bye-bye".

Did you bother to watch the Build Keynote? If you don't want to watch over 2 hours of demonstrations then go over to This Is My Next.

Sinofsky demoed the classic desktop running on ARM. In the This Is My Next Video, they get a hands on demo of Windows 8 running on a Tegra 3 slate.

Agreed, MS is configuring Windows 8 for both traditional and new Metro interface. The final release should configure itself differently depending on the system you install it on. So a desktop will provide a different optimized interface from a tablet but you can still customize it if the defaults are not to your liking.

Let's not panic just because this early developers release is still limited and doesn't have every feature properly configured yet. After all, it's not even at early beta, release candidate, stage yet.

No, they just said that ARM Windows 8 won't support apps specifically made for x86. The apps will have to be made cross-platform or made for ARM in order to work. Though that doesn't rule out 3rd party or VM environment support.

Windows 8 will have things like Hyper-V integrated, which is it works on ARM means more build in options. Besides we're still a year away from final release and a lot can still change by then.

While as this article points out Adobe can still use the same methods they use now to get Flash to work on Android, etc. Along with the new cross platform app market MS are also working on, supporting HTML5, Javascript, and CSS apps development.

I wouldn't put it past MS to also consider emulating the Native Client like Google made available for Chrome for example as well.

Again, failure to mention that only metro UI will be.offered on the ARM based $500 tablets that are intended to compete with iPad. The desktop will only be available on x86 slates, notebooks, and desktops.

So, iPad killer? Not seemingly... I.mean, an Intel I5 based $1200+ slate might be an iPad killer, but only because It's a full desktop os. (The costs also include bulk, battery life, heat dispersion)

ARM based win8 slates will basically be ipads with no apps AND no flash... I.think a $99 touchpad trumpts that...

I agree. I like Win 8 on my tablet that had Win 7, it works great, but on my desktop, I do not like it, for home use it not horrible, bad, but pretty bad. :) Work use, it is god awful horrible bad. The shortcut to the desktop is ok, but I will need to launch programs from there, and I hate a cluttered desktop. MS, should at least on the desktop have the Start Screen button, and a Start Menu button. Then Win 8 will be much better for desktops.

Also everyone needs to remember that this is a pre-beta release for developers, and MS will make changes as it reads through user comments.

LOL! That must be why the response it's gotten at BUILD is overwhelmingly positive. As for desktops, Windows 8 can be used on a desktop just like Windows has always been used. All of this fear mongering from Windows users is BS. People are always afraid of change.

If Microsoft left it up to Windows nerds, Windows would never change. It would be exactly the same 30 years from now as it is today. That is not a winning formula.

From what I have seen so far trying out Windows 8 on my Desktop PC. Metro is not going to be well received on the PC side. If Microsoft continues to push Metro on the PC its going to get bad ugly in reviews. Its not intuitive at all for a PC user. Expecting users to go out and buy a touchscreen PC is expecting a bit much. I tend to agree with Steve Jobs that Touch screen does not work on a vertical screen very well. The one thing that bugs me about my Tablet is having to clean it all the darn time.
