Activision ends Guitar Hero and True Crime franchises

The music game genre helped many musicians get back into the mainstream and titles like Guitar Hero and Rock Band were some of the strongest selling franchises for game publishers in years past. Apparently, the strong sales of music games have ended for Activision.

The company has announced that Guitar Hero is no more. The company has stopped development on the game franchise and will disband the Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue all development on titles in the franchise for 2011.

The game publisher blames the killing of the Guitar Hero brand on declines in the music game genre. Guitar Hero isn't the only previously very popular franchise to get the axe, development on True Crime: Hong Kong has also been stopped.
