Also, I managed to upgrade the stock 1GB RAM to 2GB… There are videos on YouTube that will walk you through the steps. I noticed a bit of an improvement after the upgrade — BUT — the lack of a quality GPU in this netbook is the most limiting factor.

I have owned this netbook for about a year. This review is mostly dead-on but I would like to share my own personal history with the AOD-255.

My first undertaking with this netbook was to get rid of Windows and install a lightweight Linux OS, like the kind that other netbooks come equipped with. Windows 7 will slow this poor little guy down and, in my opinion, you won’t get your money’s worth. So I decided to install Peppermint OS using a flash drive.

Next I knew I wanted to use this netbook to DJ, so I installed Mixxx and was very impressed with the results. Like the reviewer states, this netbook will handle music playback easily — and I would like to add that you can DJ with it too! (Beatmatching, crossfading, etc.)

I am also a filmmaker and at one point this last year I needed to refresh my demo reel with clips from my latest projects. Although the on-board graphics will not handle intense 3D and video effects, it was simple enough to use Openshot Editor to do some simple video editing and title overlays.

Just recently I got back into music production, and I have been using Linux Multimedia Studio to compose songs on this netbook. The CPU chokes up if I go to crazy with graphic-heavy VST synthesizers but what is readily available in the program actually suits my tastes very well.

So, video & audio… Totally possible and practical with the AOD-255!! Just ditch the Windows 7 Starter OS — you will not want the bloat when you decide to use your netbook for more creative pursuits.

I have satisfactorily ran World of Warcraft on my Acer Aspire One D255. It forces it to the lowest graphics setting, so don’t expect high-end gaming graphics. The graphics otherwise are crisp and clear, even for the screen size though using it for hours for this type of gaming may be tiring. I didn’t notice any performance issues, even when switching between the game and web-browser. Long story short, it will run some ‘gamer’ games but you are better off with a gaming machine if you are more hard-core than just a casual user.

Don’t know whether this is still relevant to you, but I recently purchased one and I can tell you it handles Flash games perfectly fine.

BTW, you don’t have to disconnect the ribbon cable, just move it around to expose the 4 screws mentioned above.

You need to remove the keyboard by pressing in the detents that are holding it down at F1, F4, F8, F12, Del keys. Then carefully pry it up. There will be a ribbon cable that attaches the keyboard to the mobo. Unscrew the 4 screws marked as “Door”, then insert a pen or something into the hole under the Right Shift Key and push it down to pop the bottom off. Then you will see the RAM slot.

Do you think an ASUS model with the N550 and ION would be much better for a $100 more? or would this one be fine as it is?

Older games should be fine, it’s just heavy gaming that the D255 might have trouble with.

When you say it can’t handle gaming, are you talking about heavy gaming? or even something like Sim City 4? (older games)
