Acer Aspire AS5470 and AS7740 pack Core i3 & i5 CPUs
Acer have announced a new range of Aspire notebooks packing Intel's new Core i3 and i5 Arrandale processors. The 15.6-inch AS5740 and 17.3-inch AS7740 notebooks kick off from $599.99 and have a choice of Core i3-330M 2.13GHz or Core i5-430M 2.26GHz CPUs, optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 or HD 5470 graphics, and optional Blu-ray drives.
Those optional GPUs are enough to tip the Acers into DirectX 11 support, making them potentially capable gaming machines too. Alternatively, when battery life is more important, you can switch to integrated graphics; even so, Acer reckon you'll see 4hrs runtime at most on the 15.6-inch machine, or 3.5hrs on the 17.3-inch model.
Elsewhere there's WiFi b/g/n, gigabit ethernet, hard-drives kicking off at 500GB and HDMI. The 17.3-inch AS7740 is also 1080p-ready, and both support Dolby surround sound. Sales begin on January 17th, priced from $599.99 for the AS5470 and from $749.99 for the AS7740.
