I agree a lot. RIM is way not gonna get much at all from selling a home entertainment device. But, as Elbert Lee says, Apple TV isn’t popular enough to be worth competing against.

First article from this author that I partially agree with. I think RIM should focus all their strength in building a better smartphone OS. But hey, who knows? Oh and I didn’t really liked the article. However, it is a good thing that Reisinger stopped whining on slashgear like he’s writing on his Facebook wall. I don’t think this will last though.

If the device is anything like their phones it will play nearly every format you throw at it unlike Apples Offerings. No offense I can’t stand Apples .mp4 and .m4v file requirements.

However I do have the WD Live Plus which isn’t the sexiest device out there, but honestly it plays way better than Apple TV which only has a slicker interface.

Rim already has two similar products on the market, blackberry presenter and blackberry media gateway, this will be an upgrade and replacement for those.
OS7 devices and the playbook have HD recording so this make sense.

This looks more like a device for connecting to a projector to show presentations etc. Note the VGA port rather than HDMI for a start.

I disagree. Apple TV is really close to where media is going. I no longer pay for cable TV or a cable box. I only have internet in my house. I use to pay $150+ for cable in my house. Now I only pay $45 for internet. Instead I bought four Apple TVs and a netflix account. In five months the change paid for itself. Do I miss regular TV? No. Most of what I watch is available on Apple TV. The only misstep with Apple TV that I see is that it still isn’t a true media portal. They need to bring Hulu and other media delivery services into the Apple TV box then you have something that will be around for awhile.

I can’t say I’d ever buy a media streamer over an HTPC, but looking at your link; “will be Wi-Fi-enabled and able to access other media devices on a home wireless network” the RIM Cyclone is already infinitely better than the Apple TV.

Well, Don, if you were any good at business, I guess you wouldn’t be blogging for slashgear. This article simply reinforces the glaringly-obvious fact that you know nothing about consumers (other than Apple cultists), business, or entertainmnet; you didn’t even mention the several companies that are making a decent living from STBs, such as Roku and Patriot, and it’s clear that you think RIM only has to “compete” with AppleTV (which, by measure of market penetration, is a dismal failure).

I got WDTV box, LOL this kid acting like just because Apple wasn’t that big of a success, that people wouldn’t want something that is not just made from Apple. Apple you can’t even play certain videos, which you can in WDTV, and other boxes, which brings me to the the main point, which is if RIM makes a box compatible with a lot formats and aggressively attacks the market with low prices, why not? Get in the game.

Well, the device pictured looks more aimed at the business market than the home market. Isn’t that an IBM PS/2 type mouse connector, and that’s definitely a VGA connector to go with the HDMI output. And there’s no ethernet connector, which you’d want on a device whose main purpose was to stream video.
On the other hand, if this is actually a device for doing business presentations wirelessly and it also happens to support video, then it would fit much better into Rim’s product portfolio. The PAL/NTSC switch suggests that this is a device you take with you, rather than leave wired permanently into your home cinema.

I could only see them doing it as a way to stream media from the Playbook to the TV.

But if they really wanted to do that, I would hope they would be smart enough to just make a next-gen Playbook with DLNA support.
