Sat here typing this out on iPad, how ironic that I use this a lot but doesn't get used for what I really want or need. I would love to be able to take my iPad with me when I go to meetings and take notes, but no I can type fast on this keyboard but not a fast as some of the board members talk. So would love a stylus and good note taking software, not bothered about software trying to turn my scribble in to typed that's what my pa gets paid for. So somebody please make a tablet aimed at the business Market.

I had an HP tx2 until it was stolen a month ago. The only thing I didn't like was that it was a little heavy and the battery life was short, but Onenote was unbeatable when it came to taking class notes, especially in math and science, which require drawing equations-the silly little electronic keyboards can't keep up. I also like to draw diagrams in my notes, sometimes with fine details or labeled axes, or sketch animals. I also have to read scientific journals as PDF's and liked to make notes in the, highlight graphs, or sketch notes on figures. It would be ideal if there were a tablet out there that has a stylus and runs onenote so that I could sync to my (newly replaced) computer.

Absolutely! I had an NEC tablet, running Windows (ugh), followed by a Fujitsu, also running Windows. Both had pens (i.e., a stylus). The stylus was wonderful, because it allowed me to take real notes. The problem was that the notes couldn't be exported out of Windows, because they were in a proprietary format, and they could not be edited elsewhere. The handwriting recognition was painfully deficient, also reducing utility. But with those two problems solved, the NEC tablet, which was incredibly light (lighter than the IPAD 1, I think), was better than an IPAD, and I'm an Apple fan.

So, please give me a stylus. But also, give me good handwriting recognition and an editable platform-independent handwriting solution.

Fair enough, the TC1100 was a slick device for its time. While that device retains some loyal users it about 8 years old and if that’s your last daily use of a Tablet PC your experience is at best dated. I never owned a TC1100 but I did develop a business application for a client that used them and even my Atom based HP Slate is superior in many ways to the TC1100. My current Tablet PCs include in addition to the Slate the HP tx2, HP tm2, Toshiba Libretto W100 with the EP121 on the way and I’ve had about half a dozen other Tablet PCs, mostly convertibles over the years but I did have a Motion slate. I know this platform very well and have used it daily for over 8 years now. I’m at the library on my bunch break inking this post on my HP Slate using a Verizon 4G USB modem.

I do agree that Microsoft and partners have done a very poor job of marketing the Tablet PC platform. However mainstream IT journalists such as yourself talk about these devices AND DON’T USE THEM! Experience on an 8 year device that ran XP just isn’t modern experience. I see reviewers for instance complain about the touch UI in Windows 7 while doing idiotic things like dragging scrollbars with their fingers when finger panning or dragging is supported virtually everywhere in Windows 7. I could go on and on about the erroneous information that I see from mainstream IT journalism concerning Tablet PCs.

Yes the marketing of Tablet PCs is poor. The mainstream IT coverage of them is even worse. But I do appreciate your effort to at least attempt to explain just how powerful and flexible this platform can be though I do think your lack of modern experience doesn’t allow you fully convey those ideas.

Actually, I was using an HP tc1100 years ago, handwriting in Word documents and emails, doing all my notetaking in OneNote, sketching and doing plenty of other pen-centric things. In the end it got replaced, and - since my job requires more writing than anything else - I opted for an ultraportable with a decent keyboard; the new tablets on the market at the time were significantly under-spec'd in comparison, and more expensive.

So, I'd say I do understand a lot of what makes "proper" tablets special. My complaint is - and has always been - that manufacturers don't position them properly. Someone like Apple (who I mention because they've just reported huge success with their own tablet sales, not because I'm a knee-jerk fanboy) does a very good job of not only showing you the product but explaining how well it will fit into your life. WHY you need it, not just leaving it up to assumption or geek-lust.

Until rivals figure that out, I'd say most people have learning to do about why tablets like the EP121 have promise.

First of on it's not a stylus it's a PEN!!!!

Got my EP121 64 GB SSD/4 GB RAM model on pre-order, can't wait. And yes Windows 7's touch interface needs much improvement but you do realize that on a device of this size and power web browsing is MUCH faster via touch than an iPad. Yes pinch zoom is much smoother overall but tap a link and 95% of stuff will load INSTANTLY on this bad boy. And no Apple filter, ie. no Flash, Silverlight or ANY other browser exstension for you!

Overall a good article but Chris but you got a lota learnin' yet before you really understand a device like the EP121 and just how good it is at a lot you've proabaly not even tried. Go ahead, fire up Angry Birds on that puppy and touch away.

Actually HTC is coming out with an android tablet that will have an active digitizer for pen input. They have not officially confirmed it but I can say this with 100% confidence. HTC filed for a tablet called the "Scribe" and they also announced that they will use N-Trig's duo sense digitizer. If that doesn't convince you, then wait til february.

Of course there aren't any android apps out to take advantage but the pen should provide extra precision in existing apps. All it really needs at minimum is a note taking app which shouldn't be too hard if it doesn't already exist.

What Microsoft needed back in the day, and still needs to a degree, is to demo Excel with full pen input. That is, tap a cell, get a small box of some kind, enter a formula and have it calculated.

Iirc back when Gates presented the umpc and tablet concepts, whoever was running the MS Office department was strongly against the pen input concept and so stonewalled any such features in Office. And now Apple have hijacked the show with their finger focused interfaces.

I still don't see the point of tablets.

Give me a tablet with a stylus and a note-taking/drawing application so I can use it as a notepad during my lectures and I'll give it some serious consideration - I think I read about an ereader/notepad with a stylus some time ago, think it was from Asus.
