I was on facebook for all of 2 months, once upon a time, during which time I logged on maybe twice??? Then I decided I don't need to be this connected, and went through the process to get myself off. I don't regret that decision, but it annoys me when my brother will send me links to pictures of my niece and I can't access it because I don't have FB--and don't intend to get back on.

when i was in Canada 5 years ago i had fb, if not only to be a "part" of this fad, i had no real use for it myself. The last 3 years i have been living in Laos, a country which is very far behind in technology, there is no need for fb here.

You talk on the phone, meet for a beer, and do everything you would of normally did pre fb. I find these articles interesting because it seems as though this technology is so intertwined in peoples lives, that not having means they are missing out on something. I am not part of it, and i am not missing out on anything at all.

I get girls phone numbers, talk, meet, all is good. And if i want to use a site to pick up girls, badoo is a good place to hook up. And as for communicating with people back home, good old email is the best, personalized messages for the important people i want to talk with.

Fb is the present, but it will fade out soon and something else will come into place.

I've been off a whole year, and while it does take you "out of the loop" I have more meaningful conversations with my closest friends.

I left because (1) I just really dont care what you are doing day in and out and (2) I dont really need others caring what I do day in and out. Not to mention the rampant disregard to privacy and constant "upgrades."

I don't miss it at all, man! I'd rather build my own site and put a blog there or something.

Doh, I missed this article. Glad I kept digging.

I'll chime in as well. No Facebook for me.

One note...couldn't you just friend his wife?

Fb abstainer tip:
Hotmail accounts still work with "Facebook connect" comments systems. (Seems AOL and yahoo do not for many people)

I think you nailed it Mr. Burns. I don't have a Facebook and it is for the same reasons you mentioned. I do not see the benefit of a bunch of "friends" that I have no real connection with. Those who are important to me I am in contact with. None of these are from high school. Also, I have never been to a high school reunion. I have no passion to kindle the relationships of past friends.

If they were friends worth having in elementary school then they would still be my friends now. The people I've wanted to keep in contact with, I do. I still get together and talk with my best friend from fifth grade who lives more than 500 miles away without having to rely on facebook or any other social networking medium. Facebook is for those people that need to know what's going on in other people's lives regardless of whether or not you're a stalker. I have no need or desire to talk with someone that I sat next to in a class or went to a birthday party for over 20 years ago.

Marley and me (no pun intended) just don't see the need to be connected to all those meaningless people we have come in contact with in the past. The one's that mattered and the ones that continue to matter are in our phone contacts list or we'll be hanging out with them sometime soon.

Last night I was grilled at a wedding as to why I don't have a facebook account by a group of people I work with. I see them everyday. I talk to them everyday. We hang out outside of work. Yet, they still want to join just so they can see my pictures and check out who I'm friends with. Is seeing me in person and talking to me not good enough?

Phillip - Great article. It struck a nerve. :o) Oh yeah, the dog dies in the end...without facebook.

I can see the benefits of Facebook (e.g. keeping up with friends and family in distant places), but I still to this day refuse to join. This is because the usefulness of Facebook is greatly outweighed by the immeasurable ocean of ASWs (attention-seeking whores) posting their every vapid thought or insipid activity. I have absolutely no doubt that these ASWs make up the vast majority of the Facebook user base, and since it's the easiest platform for these vacuous plebs to post their asinine comments to an equally asinine and disinterested audience, then it's safe to say that I will never become a Facebook member.

I agree, there are two types. I'm a type two, full of resentment and disdain toward anything related to high school ... and the new Facebook high school from which I separated some time ago.

It just seems so unnecessary. Give a call. Send an email. Send a text message. Hmph.

Excellent article. I really like how you put into perspective the value of true friendships that are constantly worked at to maintain and those that are just thumbed through in the "what's new" list.

I think we all know what everyone does on facebook... So maybe Marley prefers to hit on women the traditional way... But let me understand: Facebook is the place where you find your old friends from highschool. And you talk with them about the past, right? Because if they were really your friends you wouldn't have lost them. And you talk with them about what happened that day at school, do you remember this guy, etc. And this is something that 200 million Americans do?

My question to everyone us why the need? Can you not meet, greet, or call people to let them know these important things you share? I bet your 'real' friends would learn soon enough. Do you really want to find out your son, best friend, or mom is getting married ... by reading it on Facebook? If you do find out thst way, how important are you to them anyway...?
