Microsoft has taken part in a $24m funding package in N-Trig, manufacturers of multitouch-capable touch panels already in use in a number of Tablet PCs, in what looks to be a strategy to boost hardware support for Windows 7’s upcoming multitouch support.  Back in November, however, the initial multitouch beta drivers from the company delivered a shockingly poor user experience on the Dell Latitude XT; N-Trig have recently released new drivers, and the experience seems – with an odd omission – much more successful.

N-Trig might not be as well known in the touchscreen tablet field as Wacom, but recently they’ve been pushed to the fore after their capacitive panels found their way into Dell’s Latitude XT and HP’s Touchsmart tx2.  Those Tablet PC’s are just the beginning, though; according to Lenny Engelhardt, VP of business development at N-Trig, we can expect to see traditional notebooks with multitouch-capable displays next year, together with new gesture support.  That will include “multitouch buttons”, an on-screen palette of app-specific tools intended for fingertip use.

Benchmarks schmenchmarks – what we want to see is Windows 7 running on more and more devices!  Today it’s the turn of a couple of touchscreen ultraportables, one old and one new, to take the Microsoft pre-beta OS for a spin.  The venerable Gigabyte U60 – rocking a VIA 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM – takes first punt, closely followed by the Fujitsu U2010 (aka U820).

ms windows7After a week or so of positive reports on Windows 7 pre-beta performance – with testers generally finding the upcoming OS, even in its current early state, besting Vista in real-world challenges such as start-up and friendliness to ageing or low-power hardware – we’re perhaps overdue a more critical one.  InfoWorld’s Randall Kennedy certainly delivers the goods, with a full-on benchmarking comparison that, on the face of it, suggests that Windows 7 “threatens to deliver zero measurable performance benefits while introducing new and potentially crippling compatibility issues.”

Notch up another success for Windows 7: Ian Dixon, a Media Centre MVP in the UK, has been trying out the pre-beta OS on a Samsung Q1 UMPC, quite the challenge when you consider this has a mere Celeron-M processor and 1GB of RAM.  As has been the experience of many others, Ian has found Windows 7 to be faster than the Vista install he had on the Q1 previously.

The Windows 7 testing continues, with Gigabyte’s M912 convertible touchscreen netbook the latest to have some playtime with Microsoft’s new pre-beta OS.  Actual test results are pretty sparse right now, but UMPC Fever have been recording start-up and shut-down times which give a good indication of how usable the OS might be on the tablet.  Booting into Windows 7 on the M912 takes roughly 1 minute 11 seconds, while shutdown is around 32 seconds.

N-trig are the people behind the multitouch displays in the Intel UrbanMax concept and the Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC; they’ve just released beta drivers for their panels, while allow them to be used with Windows 7’s multitouch functionality.  GottaBeMobile promptly loaded them up onto their Latitude XT, which is running the Windows 7 pre-beta, and shot some video of the multitouch system in action.  Unfortunately, it’s not been the most inspiring success.

Notebooks, MacBooks, netbooks, now tablets: Microsoft’s new Windows 7 pre-beta has had another chance to do its thing, this time on Motion Computing’s diminutive LS800 Tablet PC.  GottaBeMobile dug out the 8.4-inch touchscreen slate and, paying no heed to its “CPU challenged” 1.2GHz Pentium M processor, did a fresh Windows 7 install.  Considering this computer would choke with Vista, to say Windows 7 was a success is an understatement.

The Windows 7 operating system entered pre-beta just last week at the Microsoft PDC, and we’ve seen it tried out a few times here and there. But now we’re getting our first look at Windows 7 on the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook.

Prepare, Mac faithful, to recoil in horror.  Gearlog have taken the latest MacBook Pro and – either usefully or sacrilegiously, depending on your loyalties – installed the new pre-beta of Windows 7 on it.  The Apple laptop was already set up to dual-boot into Vista, so Windows 7 was simply installed straight over the top.
