Audio-Technica has been making audio products like headphones and turntables for a long time. We may be in the midst of the digital music revolution with most other music formats becoming an afterthought to many consumers, but there are still those out there who like the old school sound of vinyl.
One thing that I haven’t really been interested in since I spent a week being grounded for trying to scratch with my dad’s Thriller album was being a DJ. If you are the DJ sort looking to take your game to the next level, Pioneer has unveiled a pair of new digital turn tables.
Poorly framed, low-quality photo? Non-descript but brightly colored background? It can only mean one thing: the FCC’s team of crack photographers have been at it again, and in this case it’s the DJ Hero controller that has born the brunt of their traditional teardown.
Numark have released details on their SCRATCH DECK controller for Scratch: The Ultimate DJ on Xbox 360 and PS3. The controller – which can be flipped around to suit left- and right-handed gamers – comprises of a free-spinning, touch-sensitive turntable and five drum pads, used for triggering either in-game samples or those recorded using a USB microphone.
Now this is something my dad would love. The Stanton T.55 USB Turntable is a brand new gadget that makes it so you can listen to your vinyl records on your MP3 player. And the best part is you don’t have to worry about complicated connections or transfers.
Turntables with USB connections are nothing new – we’ve covered quite a few before – but this is the first I’ve seen that can not only record into your PC but directly onto a PMP or even an SD memory card. Made by ION, one of the first names in USB turntables, the LP 2 FLASH can be connected to an external hard-drive or flash memory stick via the USB port, and also has a built-in SD slot; tracks can then be recorded straight onto that removable storage.
If you’re more reliant on your computer for your digital music than Numark’s standalone DJ products would allow, the company has three new control surfaces to offer. The MixMeister, OMNI CONTROL and NS7 all offer varying degrees of hands-on tweaking for use in both studio and live situations. The MixMeister Control is a USB-powered surface that comes with MixMeister’s Fusion software; all 94 knobs and buttons correspond exactly with those on-screen, with Fusion handling the technical side of beat-matching, setting cue points and re-pitching. Power and connectivity is handled by a single USB cable.
Numark have released their latest turntable, the TTi, which can not only play your vinyl but record it directly to either a docked iPod or any USB-connected PC or Mac. The docking station is compatible with the 5th-gen iPod video, iPod Classic and 2nd-gen nano, which seems a bit short-sighted, but even if your iPod is a different version you can still create digital copies of your records via the included EZ Vinyl Converter and Audacity software. No drivers are needed, which I presume means it shows up as a generic external soundcard.
It’s a turntable (belt-driven) that can spin at either 33 and a third or 45 rpm’s and can connect to your computer for ripping or for recording your own custom DJ mixes. The best part about choosing the Sony unit over any other USB turntable is that you get a free copy of Sony’s Sound Forge Audio Studio with your purchase.
Its name might be a vaguely cheesy pun on ‘facsimile’, but if you’re running an online store the Photosimile 5000 desktop photography studio might save you hours each month. Basically a turntable inside a 28-inch cube illuminated by 6,500K daylight bulbs, together with a Canon digital camera, the whole thing is computer controlled to take perfectly lit, instantly repeatable shots of objects.
