Sony VAIO TT Review

By Vincent Nguyen on Thursday, Nov 6th 2008 No Comments

In a world of $250 netbooks and credit crunch, is there a place for a high-end ultraportable that, in its peak configuration, costs $4,345?  That’s the question Sony – and plenty of others – are asking about the new Vaio TT, its latest luxury notebook.  A carbon fiber chassis, WWAN, Blu-ray and RAID options all draw upon the latest technology available, but have they over estimated the market?  SlashGear pulled on a pair of museum-standard gloves, buffed the test bench to a dull sheen, and prepared to find out.

In our last bit of Toshiba news for the day, the computer company has launched their new ultraportable notebook, the Portege R600 and it’s actually pretty decent. Even though it might not be as slick as other notebooks out there, it is certainly one to take note of.

Toshiba have decided to step into the budget netbook arena with a device of their own, although the company is at pains to point out that their device may not be a direct competitor to the ASUS Eee.  Their prototype – which appears to have been squeezed into a casing we first saw back at CES 2008 – uses a 5.6-inch touchscreen interface and an on-screen keyboard, and runs an Intel Atom processor and Windows Vista.

Toshiba have announced a new version of the PortégéR500 ultraportable, which neatly takes the crown as the world’s lightest laptop with a 128GB SSD and DVD SuperMulti drive.  Weighing in at 2.4 pounds and just 0.77-inches thick, the 12.1-inch notebook is apparently the first to market with 128GB solid-state storage.  In the search for increasingly frugal technology, the R500-S5007V also has an LED backlight and ultra low voltage 1.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor U7700.

ToshibaR500 12QThis notebook has a 12.1-inch screen that is LED backlit, a Core 2 Duo ULV U7700 processor, a couple gigs of RAM, a DL-DVD-RW drive, and then the 128GB SSD drive. This might actually be one of the most energy efficient notebooks there is that still maintains a respectable about of storage space.

I mean, sure the ULV processor, LED backlit display, and SSD drive will help keep the battery life up, but they also combine to help keep the price up. There wasn’t one listed on any of the sites, and apparently this particular model can only be found on a few of Toshiba’s international sites right now, but I can guarantee it’s going to cost you a pretty penny.
