If you can predict a device’s success by site stats then we’d say the Verizon DROID by Motorola is going to be a hit. google maps navigation trouble ahead 157x280 customWith Google Maps Navigation causing ripples not only among Android users but in the share prices of Garmin, TomTom and other mapping providers, it seems some location-based services providers are coming out fighting.  LaptopMag have been talking to Networks in Motion’s (NIM) Steve Andler, VP of marketing at the company responsible for Verizon’s VZ Navigator and the Gokivo iPhone app, and he’s pulling no punches about his opinion of Google.  Andler describes the idea of Android as being open as “a bunch of hooey”, and even goes so far as to suggest that “Google is doing exactly what Microsoft did, which is, they integrate stuff into the core, leaving no room for anyone to innovate.”

Of course, it’s not surprising that Andler – and NIM – are frustrated, given the particular corner of software development they chose to carve out.  Andler’s core argument about PND software is that it requires more than a few voice prompts on top of a map.

TomTom have confirmed that their Car Kit – the optional accessory to accompany the TomTom iPhone app – will only fully work with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, thanks to a limitation in the TomTom application.  The app’s limitation means that owners of the first-gen iPhone, together with iPod touch users, won’t be able to take advantage of the Car Kit’s integrated GPS receiver and speakerphone.

Weeks are flying by and it’s time for another week in review. Monday we learned that a new hack was available from the iPhone Dev Team that adds MMS to first generation iPhones and tethering to 3.1.2 OS for the later iPhone models. We also found out that Microsoft is set to issue a new update for the Xbox 360 that will break unauthorized storage devices. That means that some gamers will be unable to access the saved game data after applying the new update.

Apple iPod touch 3G Review

By Ewdison Then on Tuesday, Sep 22nd 2009 No Comments

Apple surprised many people at their recent iPod launch event by focusing on the iPod nano rather than their flagship touchscreen PMP, the iPod touch.  Still, they saved a little magic for the third-generation model, including a lower starting price and some games-focused speed boosts higher up in the range.  Does the iPod touch 3G stay ahead of the pack, or did Apple miss a trick by not tweaking further?  Check out our review after the cut.

It’s fair to say that we’ve been watching TomTom’s iPhone PND app more than its standalone navigators recently, but that doesn’t mean the company’s own development team have given up.  TomTom have just announced their latest two models, the XXL 540S and XXL 530S, complete with wide-aspect 5-inch touchscreen, mapping for US and Canada, and the company’s own IQ Routes intelligent guidance system.

It’s been about 10 days now since we last spoke about TomTom’s upcoming iPhone Car Kit, but it’s getting a bit exciting now, with the device slipping through the FCC inspection with a passing grade. And although we knew there wasn’t a ton of information to be had the first time around, we’re still pretty excited by what the FCC filing has laid out for us. Right up front, we’ve got the TomTom Car Kit showing off its own GPS chipset. And if that wasn’t enough, it also comes along with Bluetooth, for some good old hands free communication.
