Emblaze First ELSE struts new UI in video demo

emblaze first else 540x405 Still curious about the First ELSE smartphone and its nifty user-interface? Various videos of the handset in action have emerged, including a five minute UI demo from the ELSE’s launch in London this week. The handset is based on the Access Linux Platform 3.0, onto the open-source underpinnings of which designers Emblaze Mobile built the sPlay menu system, which is intended to be navigated via the right-hand thumb.

Rather than digging through numerous menus and pop-up boxes, sPlay aims to keep a consistent UI throughout the ELSE handset. We touched upon its more headline-grabbing functionality yesterday – the phone will record voice calls and store them along with records of when the call was made, and there are GPS-linked contextual reminders which flag up alerts whenever you’re near a preset position, for instance a shopping list while you’re near a supermarket – but Emblaze are planning an app store and building up to an SDK release for more functionality.

Nikon D3S DSLR is new FX-format flagship

Nikon have outed their latest DSLR, the Nikon D3S, described as their FX-format flagship and packing a new CMOS 12.1-megapixel sensor. The D3S can shoot 720p HD video at 30fps and boasts a broad 200 to 12,800 ISO range (extendable to 102,400, in fact). LetsGoDigital have already played with it in the wild, and they’re particularly impressed with the new 51-point AF system and the ability to grab screenshots from video clips as stills, all on-device.

Sony flexible OLED notebook concept gets second outing

Sony may not have made any significant changes to their flexible OLED laptop concept since we saw it first at CES back in January, but the sleek prototype is so alluring that SlashGear Japan couldn’t walk past it at CEATEC this week without grabbing a photo. Intended to showcase the potential of ultra-thin OLED touchscreens, the concept combines both display and keyboard into a single, flexible layer.

SeaHope take on Tokyoflash with touchscreen LED watch

3D tactile holographic display created in Japan [Video]

Scientists from the University of Tokyo have created what they’re calling an Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display, that’s basically a touchable holographic 3D display. Integrating a concave mirror onto which an LCD projector creates the image part of the system, together with an acoustic radiation pressure generator, the display can generate the feel of coming into physical contact with projected 3D objects as the user moves their hand around.

Toshiba 64GB SDXC memory card announced: lands Spring 2010

Toshiba have announced the world’s first 64GB SDXC memory card, capable of data transfer speeds of up to 35MB per second writes and up to 60MB per second reads. Scheduled to go into mass production in Spring 2010, the 64GB SDXC is aimed at high-resolution digital cameras and HD camcorders.

Nikon D3000 entry-level DSLR with tutoring Guide mode

It’s not just Nikon’s flagship D300S new today; the company has also unveiled an entry-level DSLR, the Nikon D3000, aimed at getting new photographers addicted. The 10.2-megapixel camera uses an 11-point autofocus system, DX-format sensor and EXPEED image processing, but the most interesting feature for beginners will be the Guide mode. Not just an automatic setup, Guide mode promises to explain why different settings should be chosen; yes, that’s right, it’s a teacher trapped inside your DSLR.

Nikon D300S DSLR announced: 12.3MP and 24fps 720p HD video

Nikon have announced the D300S, its new DX-format DSLR flagship. The 12.3-megapixel DX-sensor camera has 51-point autofocus and can shoot 7 frames per second; however it can also record 24fps 720p high-definition video with contrast-detect AF (while in Tripod mode). Nikon have added a stereo microphone input and in-camera movie editing for clip trimming.
