Hearst’s Skiff digital media service announced; 3G e-reader coming in 2010

We can’t say we think much of the name, but Hearst Corporation’s new Skiff electronic content distribution service will likely be seen as a lifeboat for beleaguered publishers. Combining an “enhanced content experience” delivery service and digital store, Skiff will make its newspaper, magazine, book and other content available on various existing devices, including smartphones like the iPhone, Hearst are also planning their own ebook reader for release in 2010, based on a Marvell chipset and using Sprint’s 3G EVDO Rev.A network for wireless connectivity.

Four Reasons to Buy the Nokia Booklet 3G

Nokia’s first PC (as opposed to the phones they refer to as multimedia computers) got a lot of hype when it was announced and is getting a lot of mixed reviews from folks who complain mostly about price/performance and that you can get better specs in a netbook for less money. After spending some time with a Booklet 3G, I’m once again reminded that there’s more to a purchase than speeds and feeds, and that value, much like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. So I’m not going to discuss the relatively slow processor or hard drive. We can agree that the Booklet isn’t a speed demon. It is, however, how a good PC experience should be and that’s worth paying for in my opinion.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 48 2009

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and weren’t too shopped out yesterday! If you still have shopping to do for Christmas, we have some seen some cool gear over the last week that might be worth a look. The Sony Ericsson Kurara has been reviewed and the verdict is that the device needs to be cheap to succeed. We reviewed the Nokia Booklet 3G this week. The final verdict was that the machine is underpowered and outperformed by first generation netbooks.

iriver Story gets reviewed: intuitive & usable Kindle-alternative

iriver’s Story has been simmering away in Korea for a few months now, but so far just how good an ebook reader it is has been a mystery. The Register have been playing with the Story and reckon its actually a white slab of alright, actually: they rate its battery life and decent audio player, though they needed a firmware update to get the best out of it.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 47 2009

Week in review time again, here we go! The Lenovo IdeaPad Pineview netbook hit the FCC Monday. The FCC is one of the most prolific leaker of gadgets and gear around and we love them for it. The CrunchPad is now said to be steamrolling toward a launch and may have a sponsorship deal in place. Word was a few weeks back that the tablet was dead.

Sony Reader Daily Edition up for pre-order at $400

We’ve got to admit, having played with the mirasol ebook prototype earlier today, Sony’s pre-sale of their Reader Daily Edition is looking marginally less appealing. Priced at $399.99, the Sony Reader Daily Edition has a 7-inch monochrome e-ink display, integrated 3G connectivity, and weighs 12.75oz; wireless access to Sony’s ebook store is included in the sticker price.

Spring Design Alex gets hands-on; shows off new Marvell ARMADA 166E ebook SoC

Whether or not Barnes and Noble liked it enough to copy it, Spring Design’s Alex prototype dual-display ebook reader is certainly nifty enough to capture our interest. MaximumPC had a chance to go hands-on with the Alex, which has a 6-inch e-ink screen up top and a 3.5-inch color capacitive touchscreen underneath for control and navigation, as part of a Marvell demonstration for the company’s new ARMADA 166E SoC.

ASUS WiFi, 3G and WiMAX ebook readers confirmed from March 2010

Further details of ASUS’ upcoming ebook reader have emerged, after executives from the company apparently confirmed that WiFi, 3G and WiMAX versions will be announced before the year is out. The ebook readers will apparently begin reaching carrier partners in the US and Europe come March 2010, with the executives claiming that prices will be “competitive” with what’s on offer from Amazon and Sony.
