Sony have outed a new firmware release for their Walkman X PMP, and the headline feature is an improved browsing experience.  The new software tweaks the NetFront browser into rendering pages faster, maintaining layouts more like what you'd see on a desktop, and boosting scrolling speeds.

Sony may not have made any significant changes to their flexible OLED laptop concept since we saw it first at CES back in January, but the sleek prototype is so alluring that SlashGear Japan couldn’t walk past it at CEATEC this week without grabbing a photo.  Intended to showcase the potential of ultra-thin OLED touchscreens, the concept combines both display and keyboard into a single, flexible layer.

Microsoft Zune HD Review

By Vincent Nguyen on Thursday, Sep 17th 2009 1 Comment

Microsoft’s first Zune attempts won it a few dedicated users but a whole lot of criticism. In the face of Apple’s all-conquering iPod touch there was only really one way to go, and that was touchscreen; the Zune HD marks not only the transition to being finger-friendly, but packs the latest OLED display technology, HD radio and by no means least 720p high-definition support. Clean reboot or BSOD? Check out the full SlashGear review to find out.

Sony Japan have announced a bevy of new Walkman PMPs, the NW-A840, S740 and S640.  The A840-series gets an OLED display like its X-Series sibling, but in this case its a regular display rather than a touchscreen.  Still, it manages to be the thinnest Walkman to-date, at just 7.2mm thick, despite that 2.8-inch display, up to 64GB of storage and a battery apparently good for up to 29 hours of music playback or 9 hours of video.

After the prematurely-released Zune HD press images yesterday, CNET had the chance to go hands-on with the latest pre-production model, and the best news (for Microsoft at least) is that they reckon it’s the best Zune yet.  Gaining particular praise are the 3.3-inch OLED display, which is crisp and bright, while the browser – though lacking Flash support – works just like that of the iPod touch when it comes to multitouch gestures.

According to the latest “open secret” in Japan, Sony are working on a Walkman and a satnav PND that would each use Google’s Android OS.  Expected to hit the market in 2010, full details about each device are unknown, beyond that Sony seem to be hoping to use the open-source platform for a range of future products.

Sony have announced two new products in its GIGA Juke range of streaming home audio equipment, which also add docks for the company’s Walkman range such as the OLED-touchscreen Walkman-X we reviewed.  The NAS-SC500PK (shown here) gets increased amplification – up to 100W – and a chunkier 160GB hard-drive, while the NAS-E300HD (shown after the cut) sticks with 60W and half the storage.
