Repurposing an iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control isn’t a new idea – Sonos have one of the more impressive implementations we’ve played with – but if you don’t want device-specific control and would prefer a universal remote, ThinkFlood have one such option.  Coming out of private beta and going on general sale this week, the ThinkFlood RedEye looks like an iPhone dock but squeezes in a WiFi adapter and IR blaster.  An app installs on your iPhone (or iPod touch), the phone connects via WiFi to the dock, and you can mimic any IR remote.

Sonos have pushed out a new ZonePlayer in their distributed home audio system, and in doing so drops the entry price by a (relatively) high amount.  The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 packages together a receiver and an amplified 5-driver speaker into a single unit, which for $399 (or €350 in Europe) undercuts the previous entry-level ZonePlayer 90 which demanded a separate set of powered speakers on top of its $349 sticker price.

rhapsody on iphone 329x500It’s obviously a week for mobile music, as Rhapsody has become the latest media streaming app to land on the iPhone [iTunes link].  Promising to do for US Apple customers what Spotify on iPhone has done in Europe, the new application offers its 8 million tracks over WiFi or mobile; however, unlike Spotify it’s unable to play music when offline, using cached versions of songs.

Like the European service, Rhapsody on iPhone demands a monthly subscription – in this case, Rhapsody To Go, which costs $15 per month.  There’s a week’s free trial included when you download the app initially, which is something Spotify foolishly didn’t include, and tracks are streamed in 64kbps quality.
