Samsung NC10 second PCI-e slot hack

The difference between brave and foolhardy is how successful you end up, and by that measure Samsung NC10 owner Graeme is pretty darn brave. Wanting to add a Broadcom HD decoder card - for buttery smooth 1080p HD playback - to his netbook, but not willing to abandon the wireless card occupying its sole PCI-e slot, Graeme took a soldering iron to the NC10 and added a second slot.

LG GW990 Moorestown smartphone coming 2H2010

LG’s GW990 Moorestown-based smartphone had its first official demonstration today, during the Intel CES 2010 keynote this morning. The smartphone – which runs Intel’s Moblin Linux-based open source OS – is expected to arrive on the market in the second half of 2010, complete with a 4.8-inch wide-aspect touchscreen and HSPA connectivity.

Intel AppUp Center netbook app store launched

Intel have announced their Atom app store beta, which we now know to be called AppUp. Set to be preinstalled on Acer, ASUS, Dell and Samsung netbooks, the download center will offer titles tailored to netbooks such as social networking, IM and media management.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 51 2009

That Google Nexus One smartphone that seems incapable of staying out of pictures and video popped up again with word at first that it was good for EDGE on AT&T. A later update found that support for AT&T at all was unknown.

The New York Times offers discount on Samsung Go to Times Reader 2.0 subscribers

Print publications are having a hard time getting people to subscribe and pay to read their news. Even long time established publications like the New York Times are finding it harder and harder to woo subscribers and are seeing their profits drop significantly. In an effort to save money, some print publications have gone entirely online and others are beefing up their online offerings. The New York Times is offering a deal for users to subscribe to its digital version.

Still, that’s just what Phoronix have done, and unsurprisingly the new Google netbook OS came in last position.

Week in review time again, here we go! The Lenovo IdeaPad Pineview netbook hit the FCC Monday. The FCC is one of the most prolific leaker of gadgets and gear around and we love them for it. The CrunchPad is now said to be steamrolling toward a launch and may have a sponsorship deal in place. Word was a few weeks back that the tablet was dead.

Samsung GO 3G netbook hits AT&T November 22nd [Updated with pricing]

Remember the Samsung GO N310 which rocked up in the US back in July packing integrated 3G? Well, Samsung have taken their finest microfiber buffing cloth to the Atom-based netbook, and relaunched it with Windows 7 and AT&T 3G as the plain Samsung GO.

Update: AT&T have announced that the Samsung GO will retail for $199.99 (after rebates) and presuming a new, two-year data contract of $35 or more per month.

Lenovo IdeaPad Pineview netbook hits FCC

It’s no ThinkPad netbook, but Lenovo’s latest IdeaPad ultraportable – as helpfully previewed by our camera-fumbling friends at the FCC – does at least have an unusual CPU to maintain our interest. The FL5-B3 – which we’re guessing is not going to be the netbook’s final name – uses a 1.66GHz Intel Pineview processor, presumably the Atom N450, paired with 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard-drive. While they’re still minimal specs in the notebook world, after what seems like a lifetime of half that memory and a meager 160GB of storage they’re very welcome.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 45 2009

Here we go with another week in review. Monday IDC released their data on the number of CPUs shipped for Q3 2009. The number of CPUS shipped grew 23% for the quarter compared to the previous year. ZiiLABS unveiled its new ZMS-08 Blu-ray quality media processor this week. The processor promises to be full 1080p HD video support and more for portable devices like tablets.
