The remainder of Toshiba’s new notebook line may not get touchscreens like the M505 Touch and U505 Touch, but you can’t accuse the company of missing out any particular niche.  The Windows 7 update gets applied across the board, with the Toshiba Mini NB205 netbook getting Win 7 Starter and either 160GB or 250GB storage (MRSP from $399.99), all the way up to the 18.4-inch Satellite P500 with a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion II CPUs, optional Blu ray and harmon/kardon speakers (MRSP from $799.99).

Expect the shelves of Toshiba retailers to be groaning by the end of the year, as the company delivers the twenty new Qosmio models it announced in Japan today.  Among the madness comes the SpursEngine-toting G50, with an 18.4-inch widescreen full-HD display, DVD burner and, bizarrely, around 4.5hrs of battery life.  The top-spec G50 has dual hard-drives (320GB and 250GB), NVIDIA’s 512MB GeForce 9600M GT video card and a digital TV tuner.

The Toshiba Satellite A305 S6864 is an appealing laptop with modern look. First thing to notice are the high-gloss surfaces from screen cover to the entire keyboard area. The unit has rounded edges and is finished with reflective grey metallic hematite stripes and a beautiful piano-black keyboard. Oddly enough, these stripes and glossy surfaces are more resistant to fingerprints compared to the Toshiba X205 we reviewed in February. Back then we couldn’t honestly recommend the X205 due to its outmoded HD DVD drive; will the A305 suffer a similar fate?

Last week’s “He Said, She Said” editorial pitted Brenda and I against each other discussing what sort of touchscreen device Apple might have on their cards.  This week, it’s something equally as topical here on the frontpage of SlashGear: netbooks, or budget ultraportables.  They’re the niche of the moment, certainly, but are consumers really getting the best value for their hard-earned dollar?

Toshiba has rolled out its latest updates to the company’s multimedia-heavy Qosmio range.  Top of the list has to be the new G50-series, which is the first to feature the SpursEngine processor (as seen with the PS3’s cell processor), here under the Quad Core HD Processor banner, for some serious media grunt.  Toshiba are quoting 10x faster video transcoding with the G50-series than a standard notebook from its stables, courtesy of the SpursEngine and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GR 512MB graphics.  Storage options range up to 500GB space, and there’s Harman Kardon stereo speakers and subwoofer to go with the 18.4-inch widescreen display.
