Most problems reported this morning and afternoon center on Online Gaming, while quite a few Log-In errors have also been reported. The PlayStation Store seems to be affected as well, while not as many problems with the store have been tapped.

The PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 has been down off and on across the United States for the past several hours. This network covers multiplayer gameplay for PlayStation systems and hosts the Sony PlayStation Store as well. PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) multiplayer systems have also been affected.

Sony: Euro PlayStation 4 to miss PSN features at launch

Sony will disable several PlayStation Network features for the European launch of the PS4 on Friday, the company has confirmed, temporarily blocking access to the functionality in the hope of avoiding a crash as gamers rush to use their new consoles. "What's New", which is the PSN's discovery stream showing recent activity on the console by the gamer's friends, and the "Content Information Screen", which pulls friends' activity related to the current title being looked at will each be deactivated at launch.

PlayStation 4 digital game sales expand beyond PSN

It would appear that the folks at Sony responsible for finding the best way to expand sales of their console and the games that are sold for the console therein have decided that keeping digital means of buying to themselves was no longer the best means of playing along with the public. Much like heavy-hitter PC game sales giant Steam, the PlayStation Network will now allow third-party sales of digital games and DLC from here on out. Games will be purchased through retailers of many kinds, then attached to the PlayStation Network for play on whatever device you've got running - PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PlayStation 4 included.

Steam users eclipse Xbox Live, PSN still far and away tops

This afternoon the folks at Valve have let it be known that they're rolling in with a cool 65 million users total for the Steam gaming network. This number can be compared to the most recent report from Sony on the PlayStation Network working with 110 million users and Microsoft reporting that they're in at 48 million users in Xbox Live. These numbers are not the same as "active users", a number which is much more difficult to grasp.

Sony has committed to boosting the PlayStation Network in time for the PlayStation 4, after the online game arena faltered at the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5 leaving some players struggling to download or install the hotly-anticipated title. PlayStation 4 gamers will be able to use real names in addition to PSN IDs

As part of its keynote at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony has detailed the PSN aspect that will come with the PlayStation 4, saying that in addition to PSN IDs, gamers will also be able to use their real names. Such a change will facilitate the ability to form more traditional friendship-esque bonds over the PS4 gaming experience, rather than the impersonal nature of random IDs.
