Sony looks to the crowd to beta test next PS4 system update

Sony looks to the crowd to beta test next PS4 system update

There was a time when software development was such a closely guarded process that almost everything happened behind extremely closed doors. Even beta tests were handed off only to accredited QA companies under heavy NDAs. Things have change these past years, with some of the responsibility of testing software falling on the shoulders of volunteers, most of them just end users themselves, but very passionate ones at that. Sony seems to have wisdom, not to mention practicality, of that setup and is now looking for more PS4 beta testers to join its army.

The Force is strong with limited Darth Vader PS4 edition

The Force is strong with limited Darth Vader PS4 edition

It's still a good few months before we actually get to see what the Star Wars universe has in store after all these years, but that doesn't mean you can't hype it to death. And nothing says "hype" like a limited edition product with iconic Star Wars branding plastered all over it. This time, it's Sony's turn churn the marketing machine with not one but two Star Wars themed PS4 bundles. And, of course, they will be bearing the face and markings of the most iconic Star Wars character of all: Darth Vader.

PlayStation 4 still on top in July, says NPD

PlayStation 4 still on top in July, says NPD

Microsoft may have wowed the crowd at Gamescom early this month, and may even have won hearts, but Sony is still winning wallets, at least in July and for now. Market research firm NPD has just given their report on the console gaming market in the US for the past month and Sony is only too happy to share it. That's because, despite not having new games for the season, both in general and for Sony specifically, the PlayStation 4 still ranked as the top console and its games the top software for July.

Expand your Xbox gaming with new Chatpad, Seagate Game Drive

Expand your Xbox gaming with new Chatpad, Seagate Game Drive

Gamescom this week has seen Microsoft make its biggest pitch to try and wrest the laurel away from Sony's PlayStation 4. While the jury still deliberates on whether it has succeeded or not (and some already think it has), Microsoft continues to throw more and more goodies to the gaming public. Completely optional but at the same time completely wanted, Microsoft is making available two peripherals for its Xbox consoles that extend the gaming experience almost quite literally, with a Chatpad controller plugin and a new Seagate Game Drive storage.

Dragon Quest XI announced as first Nintendo NX game

The makers of Dragon Quest, not only the most popular RPG, but the biggest games series of all time in Japan, earlier today announced the eleventh title in the main series. But even more shocking was the fact that the game was announced for the "NX," Nintendo's mysterious next game system.

R2-D2 themed PlayBook 4 is perfect for rebels

In October of 2014, we talked a bit about a slick device called the PlayBook 4 that turned a PS4 game console into a notebook of sorts for on the go gaming. You can’t type on the PlayBook 4 or surf the web like a normal notebook, but you can play PS4 games wherever you can find an outlet with this thing. A new version of that PlayBook has surfaced that is themed like your favorite astromech R2-D2.

New PS4 model in Japan is less power hungry, less noisy

New PS4 model in Japan is less power hungry, less noisy

Sony may have just announced the 1 TB version of the PlayStation 4, which differs only in the storage capacity, but over in Japan, it has launched a variant that has more substantial changes than that. While it's still not the fabled PS4 Slim, the PS4 CUH-1200 does slim down on a few things while still retaining the original external proportions. It has toned down the number of RAM modules used, which in turn reduces power used, which, in turn, also affects the noise that the cooling fan makes.

Sony hints PS4’s backwards compatibility is unlikely in future

Sony hints PS4’s backwards compatibility is unlikely in future

The Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 as well, both launched in 2013 without backwards compatibility with previous generation games, severing the ties, if you will, with a feature that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 offered. That's why it came as such a surprise to gamers when Microsoft announced at E3 this week that the Xbox One was gaining backwards compatibility with select 360 titles. The news was so unexpected, that even Sony’s Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida admitted to Eurogamer that he was shocked as well.
